This is a nice redesign. A lot more burly than Mario, but not outright Wario either.

I wonder if he'll still do this whenever he gets badly hurt or blown up. (maybe a defeat animation?)

You really did a good job turning a goofy gag into body horror. Even his eyes are a bit disturbing, notably with his eyebrows. To me, it looks less like bushy eyebrows, and more like gaping holes with a pair of eyes inside them, kinda like Fake Peppino or Early Fnaf animatronics.

They don't go after every fan project with Mario in it. Just the ones that threaten to take away attention from some of their recent titles. Ex: they took down the Mario battle royale fan-game because they were making Mario 35.

I don't think their making anything similar to this anytime soon.

Regardless, I leave the conscientious of "exe or not" to you. Your creation, your rules.

He's certainly Exe adjacent, given his new story of stalking around peoples games to annoy them. Though I wouldn't say he's the garden variety "evil, bloodstained, I AM GOD" exe. He's mainly just mischievous if anything else.

The Faces of Mario, Luigi, Wario, And Waluigi. Each head has a slightly different shape to one another to better show their features and personalities. Mario is more rounded like a circle showing he's well rounded. Luigi is a bit taller like an oval showing his similarities to Mario while still being his own person. Wario is a bit boxy like an octagon showing his rugged tough nature, And Waluigi is much more like a triangle, emphasizing his greater height.

An important thing I learned at some point with Mario character design is the silhouette and body shape. Even there faces.

Mario's is mostly a circle, Luigi being a bit taller is more oval shaped, Wario is bit of a boxy octagon to emphasize is toughness, and Waluigi is nearly a triangle.

I wouldn't go too far with changing his body shape, otherwise he might look a little too much like Wario or Waluigi.

The claws and tattered cape could still work, along with the triangle emblem and buttons.

Personally I'd make his mustache a little more matted to emphasize his deranged nature.

Here's something I just thought.
Depending on the amount of players, defenders get extra lives. If there aren't too many people, give the few defenders some extra lives to work with. But if they have a plentiful army, they each get only 1.

This would likely take a lot longer to make and balance overall, since 3D movement is a lot more free form than 2D movement.

But I think it would be worth the extra work, since these asymmetrical boss battle games are usually better suited to 3D space.
