I’m not sure when that changed exactly. But somewhere around 2016 I recall getting ready to visit my most beloved old neighbor lady and feeling a moral imperative to check with her even though I had always just shown up on her porch before.

I’m exactly old enough to remember it being so normal you wouldn’t even register it as a consideration, and then I remember being a teen and it being unthinkable.

You know what I think is a great and tragic cultural loss? Showing up on a friend or neighbors porch unannounced.
