๐Ÿงต I often talk about VDA, Verification, Deliberation, Accountability, as the core functions that make democracy possible. But to understand whatโ€™s gone wrong, we need to look at how those functions have changed.

Reliance on staffing shortages and consultants to save money leads to real harm. The frontline is weak and the vulnerable suffer. We have seen this before. #NeverAgain See: the Ausralian Royal Commission Reports into #Robodebt and #Veteransuicides.

A Valencia street filled with crumpled and piled cars left behind after the record-breaking flooding.

Donโ€™t forget Valencia, Spain.

Donโ€™t forget those who insisted that actions needed to avoid the #ClimateCrisis were โ€œtoo expensive.โ€

Donโ€™t forget all the record-breaking, historic or โ€œ100 yearโ€ events weโ€™ve seen lately.

Theyโ€™re not the โ€œnew normal.

Itโ€™s going to keep getting exponentially worse.

How not to battle inflation Economists including former Reserve Bank governor Bernie Fraser are increasingly convinced there are more effective tools than interest rates to fight inflation โ€“ but what are they?

Food for thought: the higher the interest rates, the higher the cost of building housing with debt funding. For everyone, including developers. So less new housing. Mortgages are mostly variable, so the pain for borrowers (and renters) is fast and sharp. www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/economy...

Biased as my husband was the PM at the time but City Deals worked well to unlock the benefits of investment in transport and fed infra investment eg Western Syd Airport and adjacent metro areas and line(s). See Launceston too. High level urban policy maybe too lofty. Needs to be more transactional?

Is the fed govt is right level of govt for practically focused urban policy? Maybe too high level and generalist with poor implementation pathways? Speaking as former member of Commonwealth Cities Expert Advisory Panel 2010-12. Lot of work and not much follow up.

Absolutely true but easier said than done. The planning controls will not do enough to mitigate extreme heat (and thus there will be higher energy bills) or climate resilience and adaptation.

Over the past year, the ACT has built more homes per person than any state bar Victoria. The result? Rental affordability has *improved*. Thereโ€™s a long way to go, but itโ€™s clear that building more homes is the key to making Canberra more affordable for all.

Australiaโ€™s rental crisis reaches new heights: 2024 Rental Affordability Index | SGS Economics & Planning The 2024 Rental Affordability Index shows rental affordability has hit record lows in nearly every major capital city and region, with low-income renters bearing the brunt of soaring rents.

โ€œNot all states experienced a decline in rental affordability. Tasmania and the ACT saw slight improvements, with the ACT notably benefiting from rent increase limits introduced in 2019. These regulatory measures appear to have eased financial strain on rentersโ€
