Deadly Enemy to Bacteria Found in Common Mold A common mold, of the same group that spoil oranges and other fruits, has been found to secrete a substance that is deadlier to bacteria than even the almost miraculous new sulfa drugs. Discovery of this property was made by an English bacteriologist, Prof. A. Fleming of St. Maryβs Hospi- tal, London. Reports of Prof. Flem- ingβs work have just reached this country. The mold belongs to the genus Peni- cillium, and the germ-killing sub- stance it secrets is called penicillin.

That makes total sense, but still blows my mind a little. I've not got much experience with a typewriter.

Using public domain images is also a good way to demonstrate copyright!
That's awesome!
So that's for stuff like underlining?
a 19th century line illustration of a typewriter thre are lots of exposed mechanisms on what looks like a ceramic body.
I'm designing some new business cards for myself and I thought, instead of using some lame clip art, I would find something cool in an old newspaper.
Voila! A really cool typewriter illustration from 1911.

Thanks everyone who took the time to reply to this today. I appreciate it.
Based on the responses, I'm going to continue to write alt text by hand.
Hey thanks for this. That's a big help going forward when I'm working on the alt text for posts. Appreciate it.
28.09.2025 18:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree. Its one of the reasons I was exploring it as an option for captions. I felt like I was t using the al text space to it's full potential.
28.09.2025 18:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for sharing your experience with it. I'm getting the general impression these things don't produce a better quality output, even with human editing.
28.09.2025 18:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks for this. It's good to know these models aren't there yet.
28.09.2025 18:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's an interesting point. I always approached alt text as a pure description of the image for the visually impaired. I had never thought that it should directly link to the post itself.
Though I suppose that's also another reason why I think I'm doing a poor job of it most of the time.
How do people feel about using AI (LLMs like chatGPT) to generate alt text for images in bsky posts?
I've used tesseract to OCR newspaper clips for alt text before, but I'm thinking that an LLM will do a better job of visually describing images, and will better serve visually impaired readers.

I've been diving into some #shortstories I've found in some #c19th newspapers.
This one, "Mr.Wilson" is a cool story that reads more modern than 1890.
And is a fun source that says $65 was 1,300 glasses of (presumably cheap) beer in 1890!
