Hi! Immigration lawyer here! Mahmood's view of the Refugee Convention as providing temporary protection just isn’t correct & AFAIK isn’t one anyone has ever adopted.

On the contrary, the Convention is clearly predicated on a long-term need for protection.

πŸ’― Spain - if I were brown, black or Muslim I’d be afraid, as a player or a fan, to go to USA right now. As a decent human being I’d certainly not want my hard earned cash propping up a rogue president and a rogue state.

(Apologies to my American friends but you know what I’m saying here! 😊)

There is nothing "fair" or "unfair" about asylum. People who are in danger deserve safety. Those who can provide it should.

It’s the small amounts that get me! Β£5,000 is peanuts for a bribe to get someone close to the heart of government! How pathetic these creatures are. Anyone with such low morals and standards should be nowhere near Parliament. This is not democracy.

We paid an ex-Tory MP to lobby for our fake Chinese firm - and authorities did nothing Investigation finds no rules were broken. It just goes to show how few rules there are.

Last week, UK lobbying regulator closed investigation into ex Tory MP Ben Howlett

We offered Howlett money to work for a fake Chinese investor. He introduced us to a dozen Labour MPs

Regulator didn't even speak to us. Our system is broken

The latest steps in this crumbling rules based order were taken when Israel, backed by the US, Britain & half the world’s governments, carpet bombed civilians in Gaza, with absolute impunity. Of course, it gave the green light to Trump. Why wouldn’t it? He’s a maniac.

Read these words from 100 years ago about immigrants in Britain – and see how history is chillingly repeating itself | George Monbiot Shabana Mahmood’s new rights clampdown looks outlandish until we remember that this kind of hardline action is part of our country’s fabric, says George Monbiot

The precedent is eerily, chillingly precise. What the current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is doing to immigrants and refugees today is almost a carbon copy of what Sir William Joynson-Hicks was doing 100 years ago. And that's not a good thing. My column.

Migration is part of what makes this country great.

We're not an island of strangers - we're an island of neighbours.

The Green Party will always support fair & managed migration.

CMA launches review of private dentistry The CMA has launched a market study into the Β£8 billion private dentistry sector to make sure it is working well for UK consumers.

Regulator investigates Β£8.4bn private dentistry UK market.

Private equity dominates the market - rip-off charges, profiteering, local monopolies.

No body voted for private equity takeover, loss of NHS dentistry.

It happens because Govts favour corporations.

Good summary and I agree on MOTM - Alderete was immense!

As for the β€œtime wasting”, the ref added 12 mins additional time (actually went to 14 mins) so it was mostly accounted for!

While we're hooked on oil & gas we're vulnerable to price shocks caused by a rogue US president.

It doesn't have to be like this.

Invest in renewables, insulate our homes, cut the cost of living.

But it was Blair’s Labour that introduced tuition fees in 1998 and many people argued at the time that it was a slippery slope. The Tories just did what Tories do when in power - exploit a situation that benefits the rich at the expense of the working class. Exactly as Blair’s Blue Labour intended.

The main reason UK energy prices are so high is not net zero but the fact the price of gas still sets the price of electricity. Breaking that link should be the priority.

Trump has cornered himself with his war in Iran | Sidney Blumenthal The president needs a quick win to avoid a quagmire – but he needs a long war to justify potential emergency powers

What is the end-game? Killing the leader means another vengeful hardliner step-in, generations will seek retribution and it goes on.

Leaders declaring illegal wars should do frontline service. Trump dodged military draft 5 times.

UK government charter flight will take off from Oman 'in the coming days', says home secretary
A government charter flight will take off from Muscat, Oman, β€œin the coming days”, foreign secretary Yvette Cooper has told the Commons.

Cooper said that Britain was working with airlines on increasing capacity out of Muscat, Oman to prioritise the evacuation of vulnerable British nationals.

Cooper said she was in close contact with her counterparts in the Gulf countries, where 130,000 British citizens have now registered their presence in the region.

β€œWe are also working with airlines on increasing capacity out of Muscat for British nationals, with priority for vulnerable nationals,” Cooper said.

β€œA government charter fight will fly from Muscat in the coming days, prioritising vulnerable nationals, but British nationals in Oman must wait to be contacted by the Foreign Office regarding these options.β€œ

Will Yvette Cooper confirm that wealthy Brits who decamped to Middle East tax havens to dodge their patriotic obligation to pay their taxes won't get free flights?
