Old friend just laid off by USDA, 1 mos short of his probationary period as senior researcher. Brilliant person who left a tenured faculty position several yrs ago to join USDA. Bright early-career researchers also being laid off. USDA is terminating a generation of highly-qualified scientists.

was at a bday party for a gen x friend and underworld's rez came on. some of this cohort were like "what's that instrument, is it a didgeridoo?" I said "it's a synthesizer" and they all looked at me like I was insane :)

02.02.2025 00:41 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0DJing Basics by sold/glorbis There are 5 basic parts of DJing I will cover for you today. If you have a bad memory like I do, you're in luck because I made you this cheat sheet. #2 DIALOGUE DJing (as with all art forms) is a conversation. It's a back and forth between you and the audience. You can learn just as much from your audience as they can from you. Keeping the conversation open and honest along with trusting your audience to understand is key. #4 GEAR #1 DOGCOPTER My partner and I consider ourselves pupils of the school of Dogcopter, in that being the most yourself in everything you do is the most important and best thing you can do for your craft (and yourself!) "Don't focus so much on talent. Making art is all about communication. A piece of art is a conversation. Every choice you make, is a statement. Don't worry about labels, or conforming to a standard. Just be true to yourself, and people will appreciate your honesty. And take a deep breath." #3 THE 3 SKILLS TO HONE DJing has 3 main skills. They all work together symbiotically and are all necessary for the craft. They are all open to your interpretation. 1) Selection: These are the songs you play. I know this seems simple, but the thought you put into your choices is what makes you YOU. Remember Dogcopter here! 2) Programming: This is the order and timing of your songs. With DJing you want to set a mood or tell a story. Being thoughtful with your song order is crucial and knowing when to end/begin songs lends itself to the third skill! 3) Technique: This is what you do to blend the songs together (and more, like scratching and effects). This includes beatmatching, EQing, backspinning, cutting, dropping in, etc. Technique shows your creativity between the lines of picking songs! Do not ever let anyone tell you that whatever gear you have available to you is inferior. We can't all afford top of the line stuff! Moodymann says "It ain't what you got, it's what you do with what you have." Gear can be: laptoโฆ
I keep this on my wall wherever I live to remind myself that I just need to practice; also a nice flashback to when I taught kids how to DJ one summer thanks to @riandearest.bsky.social
