CATS - Last Sunday, January 18, 2026, I stopped by the shelter to drop off some blankets and toys. It was the first anniversary of the loss of my cat -- the one who had been by my side for 14 years, before quietly passing away. I wasn't there to adopt. I was only there to donate. Somewhere in my mind, I remembered a phrase my landlord had said to me a while ago: "If you ever want a pet, you can get one." But even so, I had no intention of looking around or meeting other animals. At the front desk, I noticed a volunteer with red, tired eyes. I gently asked her if everything was okay. She lowered her voice and said, "We're completely full. We need to make room by noon tomorrow. There are two back there..." She didn't finish her sentence. I could have left. But I didn't. I followed her into the back room. Inside a metal cage were two black cats, huddled so tightly together they almost looked like one -- one tail wrapped around the other, four bright eyes silently watching. They weren't just sharing a cage. They were sharing comfort. The volunteer explained, “People ignore black cats. And two very bonded cats? Hardly anyone wants them. They've been here for four weeks.” My landlord had said one animal. But my heart knew these two wouldn't survive apart. They slept against each other, ate side by side, and found safety only in each other's presence. I couldn't be the one to separate them. So I went out into the parking lot, my hands shaking, and called my landlord -- crying, pleading, even promising an extra deposit if needed. After a long pause, he said yes. And just like that -- Welcome home, Bobby and Bunny. You were on the noon list, but you'll never know what that really meant. All you'll know is this: You're safe now. And you are together.
