Assistant Professor (Tenure Track Position) in Environmental Biology Position Type: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track Position) in Environmental Biology Position Type: Regular Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $102,060 to 113,443, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college level. Purpose: The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in Environmental Biology, to begin Fall 2026. We especially welcome applications from candidates in the subdisciplines of conservation biology, wildlife biology, marine biology, landscape ecology, agroecology, or ecotoxicology. The successful candidate will conduct applied research that can be supported by external funding and provide opportunities for involvement by undergraduates. SCU is on the quarter system and tenure-stream faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of six courses per year (two lecture courses, or a single lab course, each quarter), while actively engaged in scholarship. Teaching expectations include a lower-division lab course in Environmental Biology (ENVS 21), an upper-division “skills” course focused on GIS, applied statistics, or research methods; and at least one other upper-division lab or field course in the candidate’s area of specialty. Post-doctoral research and/or previous undergraduate teaching experience are highly valued, as is community-engaged scholarship. The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2026. The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences (ESS) is an interdisciplinary community of scholars – composed of faculty, staff, and students – dedicated to understanding the interactions between humans and the natural world. Required Qualifications: 1) Terminal degree (Ph.D.) or ABD by appointment start date in environmental biology or a related field. 2) Demonstrated potential for effective and inclusive teaching and/or research mentoring of a diverse undergraduate student population. Responsibilities: Tenure-track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research/creative work, and service. This is an in-person position. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to the following: Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair, including courses such as introductory environmental biology, required skills courses in GIS, statistics, or research methods; and upper-division environmental biology electives. Develop a program of research at SCU that will result in meeting the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department’s established scholarship standards for tenure and promotion. Provide effective service to the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the University and the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship, such as service on committees and participation in professional organizations and activities, as appropriate to rank and experience. IMO the most interesting finding we had here was getting beyond access to functional cooling usage.

@destenie.bsky.social et al. have found suppressed usage due to affordability burden, but here we also find equipment (AC unit) failures limiting cooling protections.

Households who can’t pay energy bills end up in a “heat or eat” situation, which means either unsafe and uncomfortable conditions or lack of nutrition. Bad health outcomes for the most vulnerable either way, increasing health care costs. Cruel and inefficient.
