We need to talk more about actual AC infrastructure repair, not just affordability to pay for power to run AC.

This special issue article by C J Gabbe et al builds on previous research to examine how #housing conditions contribute to disproportionate #HeatExposure for manufactured home residents

IMO the most interesting finding we had here was getting beyond access to functional cooling usage.
@destenie.bsky.social et al. have found suppressed usage due to affordability burden, but here we also find equipment (AC unit) failures limiting cooling protections.
And a big thanks to @andrewrumbach.bsky.social, @zacharylamb.bsky.social & Esther Sullivan for editing the special issue of @urbanstudiesonline.com on "Manufacturing the Urban: Manufactured Housing and Manufactured Home Parks" -- can't wait to read all of the articles.
07.04.2025 15:19 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Our new paper in @urbanstudiesonline.com examines thermal inequities for US manufactured housing residents due to (1) less central AC access, (2) more AC breakdowns & (3) greater energy burdens. Terrific collaboration w/ @gregspierce.bsky.social, Matt Barnett & Sara Hughes. doi.org/10.1177/0042...
07.04.2025 15:19 β π 14 π 5 π¬ 2 π 2Households who canβt pay energy bills end up in a βheat or eatβ situation, which means either unsafe and uncomfortable conditions or lack of nutrition. Bad health outcomes for the most vulnerable either way, increasing health care costs. Cruel and inefficient.

Planning for heat beyond the big city: comparing smaller citiesβ heat activities, opportunities, and constraints in California www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
The state has issued a maximum safe indoor air temperature (82 F).
@luskininnovation.bsky.social affiliate @cjgabbe.bsky.social weighs in.
IMO the real Qs are now how to pay for implementation a& the intersection w electric utility bills-affordability standards.

Thrilled to share new research we've been working on for the past year. We report on a nationwide analysis of manufactured housing and climate hazards, and the results of interviews with 40+ experts from across the manufactured housing ecosystem:

Colin gave a talk at SCU ESS today on what sand dunes can tell us about environmental changes -- really interesting research and amazing imagery (including of Titan)!

This @heatmap.news piece is a great look at California wildfire building codes, including their limitations. Not sure how many folks are aware of the latest research on "zone zero" -- an area 5 ft out from a structure that has turned out to be crucial for reducing risk

We (w/ @cjgabbe.bsky.social) did a recent analysis of MH across CA and found outsized fire risks.
Everyone in fire world knows this, not much done about it.
