On a more serious note, I can't believe how many people who don't live in NYC and don't know what actually goes on here somehow have enough expertise to explain why Mamdani will bring about the apocalypse.

I actually like differentiating between negative and minus - it leads to an important conversation about vocabulary. But yeah, the TI calculator isn't the best place for that!

These were exactly some of the arguments I used to argue that TI calculators were outdated, but somehow I was accused of supporting inequity...as if forcing students or schools to buy $150 calculators with limited functionality (and not that intuitive) was somehow more equitable.

I got i to some pretty heated debates on that other platform from people who adamantly believed that TI calculators were better than Desmos - more reliable, cheaper, more durable. I can’t get past the constant struggles I face when teaching kids how to use TI calcs. They are so behind the times.

It's also laughable how Weisberg preaches patience with a terrible curriculum that was rushed into service.

At least Mamdani has experience as a state legislator, compared to Giuliani, Bloomberg, and Sliwa, who had a combined total of 0 years of experience in elected office before running.

It’s also quite interesting that many of the exact same people who take issue with Mamdani’s experience (3+ terms as a state legislator) had no problem with someone with zero teaching or educational experience being put in full control of the nation’s largest school district

The anti-DEI moral panic, fed by the NYT and others, including people like Tyler Austin Harper, has never considered or cared that "DEI" programs included programs for disabled students, lower income families, first generation students, and veterans.
All they cared about was knocking it down.

Not enough money, and not enough buy-in and input from stakeholders - the students who are the target of the policy or and the teachers who will wind up being the enforcers.

This state law seems to be doing a lot of micro managing the problem in a costly way, without providing anywhere enough money

The funny thing is that when I discussed the upcoming NYS cell phone ban with my students, many complained about it. I responded that those who complained had phones on their desks or AirPods in their ears in class. I said they were the reason for the policy! The room got very quiet after that.

In my school, we currently have phone pouches in each classroom. The problem is that I am ultimately responsible for enforcing the policy. If a child refuses to put up a phone ("my phone got taken away") or puts up a dummy phone, then what? Not every child has a phone.

Fortunately, my building's admin has been generally supportive. However, my district has not. I'm really bothered by the general attitude of "let's mandate this policy and let the schools/teachers figure out the details." That's terrible policy that really burdens teachers.

This policy feels like so many other educational policies that sound really good in theory but leave teachers being the ones who have to work out all the details on the fly while policymakers blame teachers for not making this happen.

I know! I hate having to be the enforcer in my classroom and constantly have tto tell students to put away phones. But I worry there will be so many loopholes, like students submitting dummy phones. What am I supposed to do if I see a phone out in class?

At first, I was optimistic about AI. I even spoke positively about it on podcasts. But as I've learned more about how it helps steal authors' works and sucks up enormous resources, I've really soured on it, even for limited use. I too am open to being convinced otherwise... #MTBoS
