And yes, Mastodon missed the boat on this one. Although I also like Mastodon, the double @ in the username is confusing for most. As you can see here, it is unnecessary.

It can also act as a verification tool, e.g. @wyden.senate.gov, for public figures

The beauty of this is also it is future proof. Because if you own a domain now or in the future, you also own the handle. You don't need to worry about claiming the handle in advance.

This is of course far from you and me getting this anytime soon, but I can see some real awesomeness here, if it all works out. Will see, future not written yet 😉

You may need to pay $9 per year for the domain, but it is yours then and it's cheaper. In addition, you can always change the handle while keeping the domain (preventing anyone else from using it as a handle).

What I really love about Bluesky is how they do custom usernames, which is its own verification (aka checkmark).

If you part of an organization, you can also use that method to verify your connection (e.g. Journalists) using a subdomain. Any hostname can work!
