Oilers had Stolarz and decided it didnโ€™t work. That may have been 7 (8?) years ago but they donโ€™t tend to review past decisions.

Slower Memory Zeroing Through Parallelism While investigating some performance mysteries in Chrome I discovered that Microsoft had parallelized how they zero memory, and in some cases this was making it a lot slower. This slowdown may be mโ€ฆ

Years ago I complained about Windows creating 39+ page-zeroing pages on 96-core machines, which made memory zeroing much slower. The vast majority of the CPU time was consumed by fighting over a lock.

Here are my thoughts on AI from #msignite 2026:

Agents, agents, agents. While I personally doubt most organizations are using a lot of AI agents *today*, I wouldn't be surprised if we're just a year early on that front. I personally haven't used agents much yet, there's so much on the to-do list

I Spent a THOUSAND Dollars on HDMI Cables.. for Science
YouTube video by Linus Tech Tips I Spent a THOUSAND Dollars on HDMI Cables.. for Science

I used to be a โ€œdigital signal is all 1โ€™s and 0โ€™sโ€ and believed that a cable is a cable is a cable. Then I saw this video and, even though โ€œdigitalโ€ is 1โ€™s and 0โ€™sโ€, the electrical signal is still analog and can be manipulated.

Here's a typical use case for me using -Outvariable in an interactive PowerShell command line where I'm searching for a file so I want visual output as it searches but I also want the results in a variable so I can access more properties later if I need them without searching again

I understand that Canadian officials can't blatantly tell Trump off. That makes perfect sense. But this TV commercial thing should also show you that there's no point in trying to work with him at all.

He's an angry toddler. He can't be negotiated with.

Find other trade partners and allies.

In the US, you have ICE agents. In Canada, we have NICE agents.
This agent was part of the โ€˜This Hour Has 22 Minutesโ€™ Canadian television show. He was interviewing Americans and letting them pose for a Canadian passport ID. People were getting a kick out of it and having fun. Good on you Canada! ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆโค๏ธ

Honestly, I feel AI (or LLMs) is the newer version of the book โ€œHow to win friends and influence peopleโ€. Itโ€™s about manipulation. Playing to peopleโ€™s need for validation of their ideas or beliefs.

The original book had that as a concept, AI takes it 10 steps further with interactivity.

At this moment, I liken it to paying for TechNetโ€ฆ at least I think thatโ€™s what it was calledโ€ฆ

Or paying for the old VMUG Advantageโ€ฆ

Soโ€ฆ I guess I pay for multiple solutions.

ChatGPT hasnโ€™t been strong for me in writing powershell, too may hallucinating in parameters, cmdlets and non-functional code. But for writing I find it being pretty good.

Claude, Iโ€™ve found very good about programming/coding/etc.

If you can run psexec -i -s cmd.exe then you can impersonate a machine account on the network. Which might be problematic

If you want to quickly figure out if & where a process is writing a logfile, create a filter (ctrl l) in @SysInternals procmon for your process(es) and also Category = Write & turn off registry & network capture in the toolbar

Need to turn %USERDNSDOMAIN% into canonical form, eg for ADSI ?

Thatโ€™s a good idea to remove any network latency, but itโ€™s the application of FTAโ€™s thatโ€™s slow. Reading the file (even over a high latency network) contributes the least amount of time to the process

SetUserFTA โ€“ THE file type association utility

Iโ€™ve wondered about removing all entries in the built in DFA, disabling the policy then use SetUserFTA to do the FTA application *after* logon.

setuserfta.com

Things to ponder. Thanks for coming to my logon duration rant!

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I havenโ€™t confirmed yet, but this may be another reason published apps are so much faster. I suspect they donโ€™t have this second FTA application phase.

Soโ€ฆ what can be done to speed this up?

Disabling the Default File Associations policy will still have the built in FTA appliedโ€ฆ

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This may not be 100% accurate, especially during the โ€œrealโ€ User Profile Event phase as the User Profile Service can be doing other things. But for the FTA Explorer.exe starts, it does appear to be only FTA application.

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

When Explorer.exe applies FTA it appears to programmatically call the User Profile Service to do the application. So the only markers I can use appear to be AppDefaults UserProfileLoaded event, followed by all the FTA application events and then find the User Profile Service completed event.

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I noted that Microsoft might be aware of this as they reduced the number of FTAโ€™s built into Windows 10 Multisession used in AVD. I havenโ€™t revisited it to see if it holds for Windows 11 Multi-session

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

FTAโ€™s application appears to be a slow process and in my test environment can take between 15-30 seconds. So doing it twice REALLY doesnโ€™t help.

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Both times the User Profile Service is doing the application of the FTAโ€ฆ but the second time the DFA XML file events are being Open and Closed byโ€ฆ. Explorer.exe

So it appears explorer.exe will apply DFA again.

Ugh. Why Microsoft, why?!

24.09.2025 01:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So just trace the FTA logs by username right? Youโ€™d think that would workโ€ฆ until I saw it applying all the same FTAโ€™s TWICE! AND it will block logons the second time itโ€™s applying them too!

WTF?
