Oilers had Stolarz and decided it didnโt work. That may have been 7 (8?) years ago but they donโt tend to review past decisions.

Years ago I complained about Windows creating 39+ page-zeroing pages on 96-core machines, which made memory zeroing much slower. The vast majority of the CPU time was consumed by fighting over a lock.

Here are my thoughts on AI from #msignite 2026:
Agents, agents, agents. While I personally doubt most organizations are using a lot of AI agents *today*, I wouldn't be surprised if we're just a year early on that front. I personally haven't used agents much yet, there's so much on the to-do list
I haven't seen anything official, so it may not be the case, but this looks like the end of SCVMM: "Introducing Windows Admin Center: Virtualization Mode (vMode)" techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/windows...

Here's a typical use case for me using -Outvariable in an interactive PowerShell command line where I'm searching for a file so I want visual output as it searches but I also want the results in a variable so I can access more properties later if I need them without searching again
29.10.2025 11:58 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I understand that Canadian officials can't blatantly tell Trump off. That makes perfect sense. But this TV commercial thing should also show you that there's no point in trying to work with him at all.
He's an angry toddler. He can't be negotiated with.
Find other trade partners and allies.
In the US, you have ICE agents. In Canada, we have NICE agents.
This agent was part of the โThis Hour Has 22 Minutesโ Canadian television show. He was interviewing Americans and letting them pose for a Canadian passport ID. People were getting a kick out of it and having fun. Good on you Canada! ๐จ๐ฆโค๏ธ
Honestly, I feel AI (or LLMs) is the newer version of the book โHow to win friends and influence peopleโ. Itโs about manipulation. Playing to peopleโs need for validation of their ideas or beliefs.
The original book had that as a concept, AI takes it 10 steps further with interactivity.
At this moment, I liken it to paying for TechNetโฆ at least I think thatโs what it was calledโฆ
Or paying for the old VMUG Advantageโฆ
Soโฆ I guess I pay for multiple solutions.
ChatGPT hasnโt been strong for me in writing powershell, too may hallucinating in parameters, cmdlets and non-functional code. But for writing I find it being pretty good.
Claude, Iโve found very good about programming/coding/etc.
My experience is different products have different strengths

If you can run psexec -i -s cmd.exe then you can impersonate a machine account on the network. Which might be problematic
29.09.2025 21:44 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If you want to quickly figure out if & where a process is writing a logfile, create a filter (ctrl l) in @SysInternals procmon for your process(es) and also Category = Write & turn off registry & network capture in the toolbar
26.09.2025 13:11 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Need to turn %USERDNSDOMAIN% into canonical form, eg for ADSI ?
"DC=$(($env:USERDNSDOMAIN -split '\.') -join ',DC=')"
Thatโs a good idea to remove any network latency, but itโs the application of FTAโs thatโs slow. Reading the file (even over a high latency network) contributes the least amount of time to the process
24.09.2025 14:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Iโve wondered about removing all entries in the built in DFA, disabling the policy then use SetUserFTA to do the FTA application *after* logon.
setuserfta.com
Things to ponder. Thanks for coming to my logon duration rant!
I havenโt confirmed yet, but this may be another reason published apps are so much faster. I suspect they donโt have this second FTA application phase.
Soโฆ what can be done to speed this up?
Disabling the Default File Associations policy will still have the built in FTA appliedโฆ
This may not be 100% accurate, especially during the โrealโ User Profile Event phase as the User Profile Service can be doing other things. But for the FTA Explorer.exe starts, it does appear to be only FTA application.
24.09.2025 01:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0When Explorer.exe applies FTA it appears to programmatically call the User Profile Service to do the application. So the only markers I can use appear to be AppDefaults UserProfileLoaded event, followed by all the FTA application events and then find the User Profile Service completed event.
24.09.2025 01:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I noted that Microsoft might be aware of this as they reduced the number of FTAโs built into Windows 10 Multisession used in AVD. I havenโt revisited it to see if it holds for Windows 11 Multi-session
www.controlup.com/resources/bl...
FTAโs application appears to be a slow process and in my test environment can take between 15-30 seconds. So doing it twice REALLY doesnโt help.
24.09.2025 01:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Both times the User Profile Service is doing the application of the FTAโฆ but the second time the DFA XML file events are being Open and Closed byโฆ. Explorer.exe
So it appears explorer.exe will apply DFA again.
Ugh. Why Microsoft, why?!
So just trace the FTA logs by username right? Youโd think that would workโฆ until I saw it applying all the same FTAโs TWICE! AND it will block logons the second time itโs applying them too!
WTF?
