Citizen science is a huge part of marine conservation and one of the most fun ways of helping our seabeds. Whether youโ€™re out snorkelling or rock pooling, you can record your findings by submitting them to the iNaturalist app.

Did you know that bottom trawling is still allowed in many Marine Protected Areas? We want this to stop. We're calling for bottom trawling to be banned in seabed MPAs, and we need your help.๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Why seabeds matter? ๐ŸŒŠ ๐Ÿ’™

These vital habitats are full of incredible wildlife and store vast amounts of carbon. Yet they are threatened with destruction by industrial scale fishing in many areas. For #NationalMarineWeek weโ€™ll be sharing how you can help save our seabeds.

These colourful Cuckoo Wrasse are found on rocky areas around our coastline. They all start life as females but can change to males when the dominant male on the reef disappears! ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŸ

Worms in the sea are anything but dull and Twin Fan Worms are a perfect example of the intricate beauty these animals possess. Their tentacles help to collect food and extract oxygen from the sea water. ๐ŸŒ€๐ŸŒŠ

A Little Cuttlefish in front of a purple anemone. It has a rounded cup-like body and protrusive eyes. It is pale with brown and white blotchy markings.

The Little Cuttlefish is often found buried in sandy seabeds with only their eyes exposed, on the look out for predators and prey. They most often appear white with brown and black splodges to blend in with their sandy home, but are able to change colour. ๐Ÿฆ‘๐ŸŒŠ

A Great Scallop on the seabed.

Scallops have 200 small eyes which help to detect predators. They can swim out of harm's way by rapidly opening and shutting their shells, sending out jets of water which propel them over short distances. If they avoid predation they can live up to 20 years! ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ‘€

Lobsters are common around our coastline, but despite their familiarity you might not know that they are actually blue - they only turn red when cooked! Lobsters are nocturnal, coming out at night to search out food on the seabed. ๐Ÿฆž๐Ÿ’™

Corals arenโ€™t only found in tropical waters, we have lots of colourful coral along our coastline, like this Pink Sea Fan. They grow very slowly - only 1cm a year - so the largest sea fans may be over 50 years old!
