was not a quitter-"it's a little weird how you just happen to be teaching at our school when all of a sudden we die and then come back to life. It kind of begs the question."
"No," Mr. Anabin said. "It does not. To beg the question does not mean to raise a question. It means you're assuming a fact to be correct without giving evidence for the truth of it."
"Right," Mo said. "Right. Thanks for setting me straight on that.

Cast of Wonders 631: Sometimes It Happens That Way | Cast of Wonders I stood on the platform bundled up in one of my pa’s old work coats, its stained, fraying cuffs hanging well past my fingertips. The acrid stink of magic was thick in the air, rolling off the engine…

You all really have to read/listen to this story by @jamielackey.bsky.social, it is so good (but fair warning, not happy)

It's back up now, so false alarm, but what kind of world is it where I worry about this?

If you have trans friends, they need to know you support them. Tell them so. It really really really matters. (I was recently moved to unexpected tears by a note of support for my daughter.)

Went to work on getting a new passport (mine's expired) and got this on the form site: "Passport Application System is undergoing maintenance."

I hope it is due to being clogged with people applying to get out and not to the gov't pulling shit.

Paul Robeson met Judge Landis to end baseball segregation The Official Site of Major League Baseball

Infuriating but interesting (also I had no idea about Paul Robeson's capacities other than as an actor):

Public Domain Poetry - Haunted by Siegfried Loraine Sassoon

I'm randomly reading public domain poetry and stumbled across this delightful (not) little horror poem by Siegfried Sassoon. Not a war poem.

omg I have something to be thankful for, I updated to Sequoia and it allows me to have just text instead of icons on my menu bars (at least in Finder and Mail)

if everyone else would just follow suit, please

Ages since I've been on here, for Reasons, but I need to pick things back up. It's getting a little lonely in the hinterlands. Expect more photos than much else for a while, though.

I just read the Greek ending "τοις" (tois) with a French accent. Oops.

It's covering the same territory as Mircea Eliade's History of Religious Ideas, but she says in 5 pages what takes him 100....

I haven't read the published version yet, but I was a beta reader, and I would have recommended the book then. I can't wait to see what it looks like now.

just checking in because it's been forever, i've been busy and had health issues and my life is vey unexciting

however, I did recently read @tananarivedue.bsky.social 's book The Reformatory, and I recommend it highly. It's not an emotionally easy read (Jim Crow South) but very worth it.

This photo is not very sharp because it's a crop of something taken at a distance with a zoom, but these iron gargoyles on a church in Budapest are awfully cool. I just stumbled on it when I was doing something else with the photo.
