The new piece covers five key trends, some of which we've touched on earlier this year, including EV sales, batteries, public policy, market barriers and what comes next following the clean car tax credit's expiration.

Given that EVs in the U.S. are at another inflection point, I thought it would be worthwhile to share these insights with all you who may want to calibrate your understanding of where electric vehicles stand, both globally and in the United States.

Last week, it was a privilege to present at the ZETA Education Fund's Climate Week Event on the state of the EV market.

New York Climate Week is awesome & so overwhelming - there's like a gazillion events but also the paradox of choice playing out in real time...

Fortunately, more and more consumers are flocking to these alternative drivetrains (including battery-electric, plug-in hybrids and hybrids). But that doesn’t mean we shouldn't recognize how this could affect affordability.

It could also lead to less innovations in new hybrid technologies and could cede further ground in battery technologies as automakers will have less incentive to utilize them.

With this change by Congress, there will be less pressure to continue improving vehicle efficiency. This will probably hurt consumers who purchase gas or hybrid vehicles the most, given that electric vehicles are already far more efficient in their energy usage.

Furthermore, 66% of Americans surveyed by the group say that fuel economy is very important or extremely important to their considerations of a new vehicle purchase.

According to @consumerreports.org, improvements in fuel efficiency have delivered consumers over $9,000 in savings over the lifetime of a new vehicle in 2024, compared to a vehicle from twenty years ago.

As a part of the law, Congress zeroed out civil penalties for violating the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard or CAFE. This change was covered by a few outlets in the press, but the potential impact could be damaging for consumers in the long-term.

One of the less covered elements of the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was the inclusion of changes to our national fuel economy standards.

Essentially, consumers have until September 30th, 2025 to receive the $7,500 tax credit on a new or leased EV. Similarly, consumers will have only until that same date to access the used EV credit of $4,000.
