An international team discovered a 7.2 million-year-old Graecopithecus femur in Bulgaria. The owner of the thighbone was likely a female weighing about 24 kilograms. She lived beside a river in what was then a savanna landscape similar to that of present-day East Africa.

Not a tiny fragment, nor a single sherd of pottery, but a full, voluminous Anglo-Saxon space from the 9th century at St Wystanโ€™s in Repton, Derbyshire. The spiral columns - perhaps a memory of St Peterโ€™s shrine. Holy air encased in stone. Betjemanโ€™s words describe it perfectly.

๐ŸงตFounded in the early 19th century, Hullโ€™s Wilson Line became the worldโ€™s largest privately-owned steamship fleet. Specialising in trade with Scandinavia and the Baltic, it also transported cargo to the USA, the Mediterranean, and India. Emigrants, including Norwegians, Swedes,

In the late 19th century, this secluded and difficult to reach medieval church had fallen into a state of disrepair and the local bishop suggested that it be closed - left to be reclaimed by nature.

However, this quaint little church has endured against all the odds.

#Woodensday I recommend a visit to the Hospital of St Cross & Almshouses of Noble Poverty, near Winchester cathedral.

In the Brethrenโ€™s Hall, for centuries, the Brothers gathered for meals. The oak roof has been dendro-dated to the 1440s. I liked the angel corbels with their delicate hands.

A walk among giants - the avenue of beech trees on Linley Hill, near Norbury. This sight is the legacy of local MP Robert More, who planted the trees around 1740. This is the route you take on Stage 2 of the #Shropshire Way, between Bridges and Bishopโ€™s Castle. My dad provides a sense of scale!

Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest, it was once the largest and most significant medieval hospital in northern England. The remaining ruins include the undercroft, chapel, and an entrance passage dating back to approximately 1240. The hospital was built on the site of the former St. Peter's Hospital, which was severely damaged by a fire. This image is a highly detailed 1724 plan of Richmond, North Yorkshire, titled "A Plan of ye South Prospect of ye Ancient Burrough of Richmond". The plan was created by Robert Harman. It depicts the town seated on the River Swale in the North Riding of the County of York. This is an exceptionally rare large-scale plan; one source describes it as one of only two known original examples. The map is known for its intricate detail, including a bird's-eye view of the town's buildings, streets, and the prominent Richmond Castle. It is bordered by numerous coats of arms belonging to local nobility and gentry. Image: The British Library

The King's Closet, Knole, Kent Situated between the Cartoon Gallery and the King's Chamber, the King's closet was a forerunner of the modern toilet, equipped with a well padded commode, mirror & pomades. It dates to the 17th century when Knole was given a suite of rooms for king James I.
