RAF Neatishead, Norfolk, once the nerve-centre of Britainโ€™s Cold War air defence. Built in the 40s, it became the longest-serving radar station in the world. The white dome houses the modern Type 92 radar, while the surrounding bunkers trace decades of evolving radar technology.

Linley hill

A walk among giants - the avenue of beech trees on Linley Hill, near Norbury. This sight is the legacy of local MP Robert More, who planted the trees around 1740. This is the route you take on Stage 2 of the #Shropshire Way, between Bridges and Bishopโ€™s Castle. My dad provides a sense of scale!

This image shows the ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital chapel located within the Museum Gardens in York. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest, it was once the largest and most significant medieval hospital in northern England. The remaining ruins include the undercroft, chapel, and an entrance passage dating back to approximately 1240. The hospital was built on the site of the former St. Peter's Hospital, which was severely damaged by a fire. The ruins are situated in the northeastern corner of the Yorkshire Museum Gardens, near the River Ouse. Image Tilman2007 CC BY-SA 4.0

This image is a highly detailed 1724 plan of Richmond, North Yorkshire, titled "A Plan of ye South Prospect of ye Ancient Burrough of Richmond". The plan was created by Robert Harman. It depicts the town seated on the River Swale in the North Riding of the County of York. This is an exceptionally rare large-scale plan; one source describes it as one of only two known original examples. The map is known for its intricate detail, including a bird's-eye view of the town's buildings, streets, and the prominent Richmond Castle. It is bordered by numerous coats of arms belonging to local nobility and gentry. Image: The British Library

The King's Closet, Knole, Kent Situated between the Cartoon Gallery and the King's Chamber, the King's closet was a forerunner of the modern toilet, equipped with a well padded commode, mirror & pomades. It dates to the 17th century when Knole was given a suite of rooms for king James I.

Topcliffe Motte, known as Maiden Bower, was established by the Percy family soon after the Rising of the North in 1069. Originally a timber tower with palisade defences, it was strengthened in 1174 by Geoffrey Plantagenet, Bishop of Lincoln.

Beyond the motte, partly concealed by trees on the raised bailey, lie the earthworks called Manor Hills site of a later 14th-century Percy residence. Despite a formidable five-metre ditch, the defences were overrun in 1489 when a local mob breached the site and murdered the 4th Earl of Northumberland.

A view of the earthworks of Cock Lodge, the medieval moated manor that formed part of the Percy estates at Topcliffe. Henry Percy was likely staying here in April 1489 when he proposed that the villagers contribute to a tax for the Kingโ€™s war in France. Topcliffe had previously been spared such levies because of its exposed position on routes south from Scotland. The demand provoked fury: a local mob rose up and murdered Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland. He was later buried in Beverley Minster.
