Drifting in a kayak on Kintla Lake at sunset , Long Knife Peak rose across the water like a serrated crest catching the last of the day’s light. The western sun angled low, striking the ridge and turning its blade-like edges a warm gold while the slopes below settled into deep blues and greens. The reflection stretched across the still lake, the shapes of the cliffs softening into wavering bands of color that followed every tiny movement of my kayak. The dark line of standing timber reaching toward the point where the mountain’s shadow touched the water. Farther out, the whole scene held a sense of evening settling in — not dramatic, just steady, the kind of calm that lets the peaks show their contours without hurry. The lake, the light, and Long Knife Peak all aligned for a moment, and from the surface of Kintla it felt like I was paddling through a mirror that led straight into the mountain’s face.
