I’ve got a paper in press on automobile culture and far-right populism, which makes a very similar argument. There’s definitely a lot more work needed on this. My core claim is that far-right populism is embedded in local sociocultural identities — including food, hobbies, and aesthetic tastes.

His food blogging isn’t really about “Bavarian authenticity”, it’s part of his ordinary-guy appeal, just like you said. He also posts constantly about Star Wars, which is hardly a Bavarian identity marker…
