@robertferry.bsky.social, yes. China is in track for renewables to provide more electricity generation than fossil fuels by the early 2030's or sooner. Here's China's generation data from EMBER comparing fossil with renewables in percent. πŸ§ͺπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘β˜€οΈπŸ’¨πŸ’§πŸ”‹

About 20% of all LNG travels through the Strait of Hormuz. This is the energy source the NZ Govt wants to use instead of expanding renewables. A new LNG import terminal would be paid for by a new tax on our electricity bills (electricity which is mostly renewable). Nuts.

In Trump’s video about the American soldiers who have died you can see the exact moment where he stops reading the script. It’s his β€˜that’s the way it is…’ line delivered with a weird riff and half smirk. A man who has always thought dead soldiers are losers who get nothing for dying.

Apollo with the dodgeball of prophecy

Years ago in another life I gave a guest lecture at The Hague warning β€œAI weapons” could be invoked to remove accountability for war crimes from the chain of command. I said β€œthere are no autonomous weapons, only unsupervised ones,” and sadly it seems I was cooking with that one

Yesterday was Elizabeth Taylor's birthday, so here she is in her salad days, smuggling a kitten. #Caturday

Today i thought what should i do in case of an β€œend of the world” scenario.

The best i could come up with is a long bike ride or two. It really is my happy place.

Seems silly but pleasantly tired & i’m 40k closer to my March targets.

Friends in Dubai are freaking out a bit but life goes on.

Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote:

"The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same."

β€œYou have got to be fucking kidding,” the Rest of the World has remarked, as the US entered yet another war in the Middle East without any clear motive, strategy, objectives, popular support, succession plan or exit arrangement, leading to suspicions it has no fucking idea what it is doing.

War powers debate intensifies after Trump orders attack on Iran without approval by Congress Key members of Congress are demanding a swift vote on a war powers resolution that would restrain President Donald Trump’s military attack on Iran.

I wrote about this after the attack on Venezuela. The United States must be reined in or the consequences could be dire.

Rapidly rejected US tech platforms is one important lever to use to make it feel pain and to reduce one form of its leverage.

Is it okay to just go ahead and assassinate foreign leaders you don't like now?

The presidents and PMs celebrating today's events, might want to have a bit of a think about the precedent they're setting.

Hey instead of making NZ more dependent on fossil fuels extracted from a war zone where the US and Israel routinely start bombing people, let’s embrace renewable energy. #SayNoToLNG

We are deeply concerned by the situation in Iran.
Our first thoughts are with the people caught up in this conflict - in Iran, in the countries in the wider region, and the New Zealand families worried about loved ones.

We recognise the courage of Iranians who have taken to the streets demanding change, at enormous personal risk and we condemn the serious human rights violations that have been perpetrated against them. Military escalation does not produce the stability the region needs.

The attacks on Iran and the retaliatory strikes undermine international peace and security and put civilian lives at risk.

New Zealand must urge all parties - including close allies - to show restraint, pursue diplomatic solutions and first and foremost, protect the rights and safety of Iranian civilians.

New Zealand must use its voice on the world stage to call for de-escalation, for a return to negotiations, and for the right of the Iranian people to determine their own future.

That’s a proper Labour/Labor party statement from Chris Hipkins, leader of New Zealand Labour.

Speaks to values, values of peace, international law, and the values of the people of Aotearoa.

Aotearoa New Zealand is a country with a big heart, this is how I’m used to that place responding.

So what you are spelling out is that Russia can't trust the US. The US is untrustworthy and there is no honour among thieves that kind of idea.

The Russians gambled by illegally helping bring Trump to power. It's paid off in many ways, but it's also spectacularly backfired. They lost Venezuela, likely Cuba next, and now their ally Iran just got decapitated.

Its tightrope walking at its worst. Respect for international law is a two way street. Throwing out the existing nuclear treaty because it was signed by Obama is what started tis chain of events.

Both Luxon & Peters are no better than chancer or con men.

I have zero confidence in either of them

"Say I am alive. I am alive. Oh my god. "

This is a useful talk. It is more supportive than I expected.

"LLM's are not rational minds."

(What we have learned is that human intelligence is much more complex & nuanced than we thought. )

And much more expensive ( IMHO) unjustifiable use of resources
