A shadowy nebula with tints of orange, red, and blue. There are several bright, newly formed stars. Some of those stars have great jets of interstellar gas emerging from opposite ends. The jets of multiple stars are all at the same angle.

This image is the groundbreaking proof of a long believed astronomical concept.

This is the Serpens Nebula, an active star-forming region. Look closely, and you'll spot multiple stellar jets being ejected from the newly formed stars. (1/3)

I've had this in the past. This time I gave my Y11 two @1stclassmaths.bsky.social papers, with the QR codes to get to the answers. I told them what I would be checking for would be whether they had had a go and marked the papers. That way, at least they can use it like a Mock "Walkthrough"...

NEW: A hobbyist has created Nearby Glasses, an app that warns you if someone close by is wearing smart glasses. 404 Media spoke to the creator who said he was inspired by our coverage that uncovers how men are wearing Meta's Ray-Bans to covertly film massage parlor workers.

Mathematical Miscellany #101 A compilation of mathematical goodies! It is so important that students check answers for reasonableness, yet they frequently don't. Examiners frequently report that students lose "easy" marks by providing answers that are physically or mathematically impossible. Checking answers can make a difference in students' grades. For example, always sanity-check real-world results. I once had a student calculate an individual’s height as 4 cm.

A reminder, before a certain movie probably makes a big thing of it again:

A young Irish couple did not provide the critical data that made Stagg tell Ike to delay D-Day.

The most critical data came from HMS Hoste, alone out in the Atlantic.

The Blacksod story is nice. But it's not true. /1

See those two dots with arrows pointing to them?

They're giant gas planets orbiting their star, located 307 lightyears away.

These are directly imaged exoplanets.

Take a good look at this close-up of Io β€” the terminator slices it straight down the middle. Right side catches full sunlight and lights up in these vivid yellow-oranges. Left? Mostly blacked out, but you can still make out stuff because Jupiter's glow is bouncing off it (that's the Jupitershine doing its thing). The ground's a mess: rough everywhere, spotted with these huge volcanic sinks called paterae, plus darker smudges β€” sulfur gunk or silicates most likely β€” and patches that glow a bit brighter. Those could be fresh lava spills or just sulfur dioxide frost hanging around.
