In what my husband says is a very 'me' thing to do, I lost my second favourite pair of running gloves somewhere on my 10km run over the fields today so had to retrace the entire route to find them because I couldn't just leave them out there on their own in the cold and the mud! Found them though π₯³

Yep, this is what I've seen (working with autistic university students). Sometimes I wonder if some parents prefer a private diagnosis (if they can afford it) precisely because it keeps things off NHS records. But I've never seen withholding that info be anything other than deeply damaging

Parents: Don't Hide Your Children's Autism Diagnosis From Them β THINKING PERSON'S GUIDE TO AUTISM
since I didnβt know about my autism diagnosis, I just assumed there was something wrong with me and that I deserved what I got.
Parents, pls tell your autistic kids they are autistic: "You may think that an autistic child wonβt notice they are different than their non-autistic peers; I have not met one autistic person (me included) who hasnβt noticed their difference early in life."

Absolutely this. I've seen first hand what it can do to people to find out, when it the depths of a terrible situation and struggling to access support, that they were diagnosed all along. Especially with private diagnoses that don't appear on your medical record

Anyone can become disabled at any time.
Your life can change in an instant, no matter how strong and healthy you think you are.
People will leave you. Funds will dry up. Life will get tougher.
Itβs not a moral failing.
Itβs a minority group you can join anytime.

Now that all our kids are safely at secondary school/sixth form, I can breathe the sweet relief that is my first year without the angst of World Book Day. After 13 years, freedom from its tyranny!

I read this earlier and I wasn't impressed, a bit like all the other quote posters. I guess I'm wondering why we're seeing this framing at the same time as the SEND white paper comes out? π

Ah, another of Prof. Uta's regular, "The world moved on & I don't like it" articles, claiming that autism is a disease, & inferring most autistic women are likely misdiagnosed - not autistic, that if you can manage a conversation you're not autistic, & there's no such thing as masking.
Oh dear.

a jeep is driving down a road that has been damaged by an earthquake with the words viralhog on the bottom
Alt: A Jeep is driving down a road that has been damaged by an earthquake. It is weaving between massive cracks and holes.
We should not underestimate the massive amount of cognitive processing power currently being taken up by having to map and re-map constantly the position and location of every single ruddy pothole on every single road so as to avoid losing a wheel whenever venturing forth from home

When modern researchers or orgs talk about βpreventingβ autism, they donβt mean βcuringβ living #autistic people. That is impossible; there is no non-autistic version of us hiding underneath!
βPreventing autismβ means βeliminating autism from the gene poolβ by screening out autistic pregnancies.

I'm sure the high stakes nature of summative assessment doesn't help - there's little space or time or safety to get something a bit wrong and then try again without penalty, or without having to work through a 'process' like mit circs. But changing our entire assessment ethos and framework is HARD

π£ Competence standards klaxon! π£
I do really like the approach this article is talking about (we have something similar on some modules here). But we HAVE to talk about speaking and presenting skills in the legal context of competence standards
