𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦.

he will be like this

his body broken and limp in ratio's arms

forever.

he remembers the acceptance in his eyes. lips just barely parting, softness thick in his eyes. he was beautiful. ratio wondered what it would be like to grow old with him, then he realised, 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘭𝘥.

he remembers aventurine's joy, bright and golden as the sun lurching out of the sea. he remembers his sadness, the sobs retching out of his throat in the middle of the night when he thinks ratio is sleeping, oil smeared across his hands and trailing down his cheeks.

but are humans not created, too?

machines are not humans,

but are humans not just machines of a different kind?

ratio isn't sure what it means to live.

but aventurine -

aventurine is so 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦.

in another life, they'd have a child. pieces of ratio in the dark wisps of their hair - and echoes of aventurine in their smile.

but not in this one. because aventurine is synthetic, a machine; created.

𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.

and he thought and thought and thought, of all manner of horrible and wonderful things.

in another life, they would have been just like this - curled up together on a bed in a house they'd call their own. aventurine to his chest, ratio's palms to his stomach.

his chest rose, then fell, then rose, and fell...gentle and slow, just as a tide, rolling its waves on a beach. aventurine fit perfectly into the cradle of his arms. sometimes ratio would trace the pinkness of his cheek, the clean layer of sweat on his skin,

but some heavy emotion, so great that he could not speak.

during those moments of peace, he would draw aventurine into his arms, sharing his space, his air. the whirring of his pulse, thumping from where ratio laid his palm on the curve of his chest.

"this tastes sweet," aventurine would say. "i like it."

it tasted sweeter on his lips. warm as sun-hot stone and soft as the velvet of petals. he tasted like the honey and apples they just ate, and there was a rushing in ratio's throat - not from food or drink -

synthetic creations of the past eras would not be capable of consuming biological matter, but the technological advancements that led to the creation of advanced androids such as aventurine have made it possible for the mechanical to obtain energy from food.

ratio thinks about it. food, change, growth, 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.

what does it mean to live?

the images come to him quickly. of shared meals in times of respite, aventurine's knees knocking his, and their knuckles brushing as they passed each other bread and fruit.

which takes place through several generations of an organism. this requires reproduction, the act of passing on genetic information through a sexual or asexual process. any organism that can reproduce is also capable of movement, and anything capable of movement can breathe.

living organisms must also be able to experience change and growth over time. related to this, they must respond to their environment and other stimuli. this includes adaptation. adaptation is a part of evolution,

they must rely on energy, which can be obtained via the synthesis of chemical energy from light energy; these living organisms include autotrophs such as plants and algae. organisms that gain energy through the consumption of other organisms are the heterotrophs, the consumers.
