To answer your question about how far in advance farmers plan, it's almost a year. Ideally, you rotate crops every year so that you don't deplete the soil of too much of a certain nutrient. Corn depletes nutrients faster than soybeans. So most farmers bought - or at least placed orders for -

A few weeks ago, they had to lay people off. They are very good to their employees and in the 18 years my husband has been with them, they've only laid people off one other time. (Unlike big orgs like Deere who seem to lay people off and hire them back monthly.)

They are a private company owned by a wonderful family local to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They've been in this community for a long time - well over 100 years. Precision ag is very important to maintain soil quality as well as maintain water quality. They are a very lean company - its kind of amazing.

My husband works for New Leader Manufacturing. They proudly are the leader in precision ag spreaders. They are the only company left that is "color blind" - they work with all the major OEMs - John Deer, Case, AgCo. (Typically, these companies demand exclusivity.)

The problem is, this won't stop at the farmers. Ag runs incredibly deep in this state. From farm equipment to co-ops, mechanics to fix the equipment, trucking to haul everything, etc. The ripple effect of all of this will reach well beyond the farmer.

I live in Iowa and have my whole life. The secretary of ag was just here earlier this week (I think it was this week) to assure farmers that aid would be coming from the federal level. Just like it did the last time Trump did this.
