Page one of eight. Hal, a lanky man with long-ish hair wearing glasses, slacks and a hoodie over a shirt, stands behind a sitting David, a muscular man with a short mullet and growing beard. Arms crossed, he smokes a cigarette and is wearing only pants while Hal tends his wounds.

Page two. Three panels. Hal stares at David's back, bottle and cleaning tissue in hand. A large gash is on David's left shoulder blade, healing now, but ugly. David asks, "Hal?" while the lanky man remains silent, staring, his mouth turning downwards.

Page three. Five panels. Hal smiles animatedly, saying, "all done. I think I'm getting the hang of this, haha", while holding a first aid kit. David watches him walk away in silence. Hal's face falls when he turns away, darkened by his thoughts. David reaches for his hoodie, yanking him back. Hal turns to see him, shocked out of his head while David frowns at him, saying "hey".

Page four. Three panels. David points at him, saying, "I told you to stop beating yourself over it. You got caught, I hesitated. Damage's done. We live and learn." A short flashback shows Otacon in his lab coat, glasses askew on his face, broken, one eye growing smaller from a punch, staring in shock without concern for the gun pressed again his temple. In front of him is Snake, aiming with a gun but pausing, the fatal moment of hesitation. A man in military clothes raises a knife behind Snake, aimed at his back.

Page five. Five panels. Hal averts his eyes, frowning. "How can you say that?", he asks, "I nearly got you killed." He touches the edge of his glasses with his ring and middle finger to fix them, saying, "shouldn't have been there in the first place... What good am I to you in the field if I can't defend myself?" He smiles humorlessly, slowly turning his face down. "We should find you a better match after all. I'm not cut out for this." He begins to tear up, starting to say, "Maybe Philanth--" A hand reaches for his face before he finishes the thought.

Page six. Three panels. David holds him by his left shoulder, simply calling his name, "Hal", with an intense, serious expression. He squeezes Hal's shoulder. A tear falls down Hal's face, and David dries it with his thumb.

Page seven. Two panels. David leans back, sighing as he eases his expression. He's holding his cigarette with his other hand. Hal says, "right," and removes his glasses to wipe his face with his sleeve. He raises his head and smiles at David, saying, "together". David responds, "damn right", smiling right back.

Last page. The page reads "For Serendipity3301, by spillingdown". There is one last drawing as an epilogue of sorts. Hal lies on a bench, wearing a t-shirt and a towel around his shoulders. He struggles to raise a metal bar with no weights attached, huffing while his arms shake. David spots him, arms crossed, smoking again, and says, "let's work on your self defense, though. Give me 10 more." End.

got another "i wish i could draw" comment this week and i am yelling the same thing i am always yelling: drawing is a technical skill. it's teachable and learnable and it is never "too late" to start picking it up
