Two people I deeply admired, and had great fondness for, died in two days: the brilliant, boundary-busting novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, and the kind, discerning, and generous literary agent Esmond Harmsworth. Thinking of them both and grateful for their legacies.

Janet Malcolm Understood the Power of Not Being ‘Nice’ (Gift Article) The writer is remembered, above all, for her ruthlessness. But when I went looking for it, I found something much more complicated.

The Times should have published this as a loving elegy. But to publish this without asking Roiphe to confront the fact that Malcolm actually lied to her subjects seems irresponsible. I know she felt that was legitimate, but it should also be transparent.

They are gorgeous!!
