Coming from the book world, where convincing a dozen people to show up for an author reading can often be a challenge, I was gobsmacked.

I did a "Boozy Lecture" last night, and I'm astonished. More than 100 people gathered at a Calgary sports bar listen to me talk about migrant labour for an hour. Tickets for the event, all free, "sold out" within minutes. This happens for every lecture the group puts on. www.boozylectures.com

So... in the separatist chess metaphor, the white queen defeats her own white king on behalf of the white rook? Maybe stick with checkers, dumbasses.

Family seeking $1.3M owed by Alberta separatist leader Dennis Modry after court order | CBC News Relatives of a prominent Alberta separatist who met with U.S. officials are upset that he has failed to pay back more than $1.3 million that he owes from a court order issued almost a year ago. A B.C....

Worth reading the whole article. Not only is Modry despicable, he’s also profoundly stupid.

Being a working writer with deadlines is great but it's also unbelievably stupid. Like sorry guys I can't go out tonight, I am thirty-three years old and I have homework that I begged to do.

I’ll be pontificating to strangers at a Calgary bar this week. Hardly a rare occurrence, to be honest.

... glanced *west* at Iraq. Dammit!

But I do trust the Iranians to decide what is best for their country. I won’t begrudge their current hope and happiness. (10/10)

Nor can we rely on Trump or Netanyahu, the world’s worst people, to do the right thing. Difficult and bloody times lay ahead. (9/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Nobody knows what will come next. We’ve all seen what an America-backed Israel can do to a population whose lives mean nothing to them. And history has been unkind to the recipients of American-gifted regime change. (8/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

However, the end of the regime would be an objectively positive thing for the people of Iran. Sanctions and proxy wars have failed to unseat the ayatollahs. Elections have been meaningless. Protests brutally and bloodily put down. Maybe this is what it takes. (7/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, these attacks break international law. No, I don’t trust for a moment the motivations of Donald Trump and his genocidal puppet masters in Tel Aviv. Nor do I believe for a moment that they truly give a shit about the lives of Iranians. (6/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

After recent conversations with Iranians, I wonder if I was wrong. Maybe it’s time we listen to the Iranians who don’t see this current assault as an attack on their people, but the rescue they’ve long called for. (5/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I considered this to be simply bluster – the exaggerations of an oppressed people. Certainly Iranians wouldn’t actually welcome an American bombardment, I thought. (4/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Iranians had glanced east and watched George W. Bush’s forces unseat the Taliban in Afghanistan. Then they glanced east to watch Bush remove Saddam Hussein from Iraq. β€œPlease, Bush, bomb us next,” one man told me. (3/10)

01.03.2026 23:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Their willingness to openly disparage the Islamic regime surprised me, but not as much as when they told me they wanted America to bomb them. (2/10)

I visited Iran in 2003 and 2004 for a book I was writing. People warned me against talking politics while I was there, but I quickly learned that politics was all Iranians wanted to talk about. (1/10)

Pierre Poilievre is misleading the public about refugee healthcare
YouTube video by The Breach Pierre Poilievre is misleading the public about refugee healthcare

Pierre Poilievre says refugee claimants are undermining Canada’s health care systemβ€”but it couldn’t be further from the truth.

@desmondcole.bsky.social fact checks his misinformation and explains how blaming the most vulnerable distracts us from fighting for good health care for all.

I Don’t Recognize Alberta Anymore - Macleans.ca My province has always fought with Ottawa. What’s new is a premier who gives legitimacy to separation.

Maclean's approached me about writing a personal essay on Alberta Secession and my opposition to it.
It was published today.
