Indeed, with Ale we showed how translation-invariance and non-Gaussian input statistics conspire to let neural networks learn localised, conv-like receptive fields w/out any explicit constraint; we also have new works clarifying the learning mechanism. We apply the statistical physics toolbox to analyse a simple model of reinforcement learning, and find some cool effects, like a speed-accuracy trade-off for generalisation 🚀
