A sculpted supercell thunderstorm is coming over the opposite rim of the canyon, and a lightning bolt reaches out from the top of the storm into the canyon below. The Colorado River, and the trench it has carved into the landscape are visible for tens of miles off the left. The rain overtaking the far side of the canyon begins to obscure some of the features, and in the back of the storm you can see where a wall of dust is racing across the landscape as the severe winds rush out of it.
Crescent Junction, Utah. A line of storms is rolling over a mesa in the distance, the red rock jutts out from the landscape and is covered with scattered dead foliage. A bright bolt lands on the corner of the mesa illuminating the terrain around it and the clouds above it. Another dim bolt lands somewhere behind the terrain far away to the right. The pasture where the photo was taken has a mud road winding through the foreground
Grand Canyon NP. The canyon walls and bluffs within it are illuminated by the warm light of the sun setting out of frame to the left. The far rim and part of the river are obscured slightly by rain. A small storm looms over the canyon, the clouds taking on a slightly purple hue as blue hour approaches, and the sky is clear to the right of it. A lone bolt branches its way out of the storm cloud and strikes below the rim of the canyon to the right.
White River, SD. A line of severe storms is moving across the rolling green prairies South Dakota. A ragged lowering of clouds extends into the distance. 3 huge branching lightning bolts fire out of the cloud top. One lands nearby in the field illuminating the grassland, another lands slightly further away illuminating a small farm and the fields around it. The last one lands somewhere just beyond the horizon. The second bolt lights up the lowering of the storm on its way down, and all 3 illuminate the cloud tops where they emanated from.
Lightning is probably the #1 driving force behind my photography. It is far and away my favorite subject. It is extremely challenging, very unpredictable, and when you pull off the shot it is imo the single most rewarding part of chasing.

Mason, and a gorgeous supercell. I live such a cool little life.
This supercell absolutely made the second day of chasing worth it. Stout little storm coming off the Capitans. #nmwx
21.10.2024 01:40 — 👍 94 🔁 15 💬 3 📌 0Today was… one of the chases of all time.
@masonfreywx.bsky.social and I (against our better judgement) snagged a cheap hotel room in Tucumcari, and we’re trying again tomorrow.
Always gotta take a photo of this handsome guy on every chase though. Main event of the day.
A red fox standing on a lone rock in a vast field of green grass with a backdrop of trees.
I thought I was in some fantasy movie for a second when I saw this fox.
