A magazine cover, with a single illustration covering the entire page, and no headlines over the top. A hand illustration -- perhaps watercolors -- shows a snowy day and an empty road heading towards the viewer. In the distance, a cozy christmas tree store surrounded by green trees, some cut and some still standing, with a cozy cabin behind. In the foreground, a jaunty woman with hat and sunglasses and scarf bicycles toward us, with a christmas tree horizontally held on the front rack of her bike and a black scotty dog running alongside. She and the shop and the cabin are all in pastels; pinks and purples and white. Her white scarf and hat match the white snow on the store and cabin. It is a cheerful, jaunty, undaunted tone, and evenly spaced big snowflakes float down over it all. At the top the magazine name, The New Yorker, the date Dec. 19, 1942, and the Price: 15 cents. At the bottom is the signature of the artist, Garrett Price https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Price
It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.ποΈ

Immigrants kept from Faneuil Hall citizenship ceremony as feds crackdown nationwide
Trump administration is pausing naturalizations for immigrants from 19 countries.
βShe showed up as scheduled, and when she arrived, officers were asking everyone what country they were from, and if they said a certain country, they were told to step out of line and that their oath ceremonies were canceled.β

Simply amazing that the Supreme Court declared an end to legal race discrimination in the affirmative action case two years ago and now allows overt racism in both immigration arrests and redistricting.
Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Three red Capital Bikeshare bikes in a dock. The middle one has a Christmas tree bungeed to its front rack.
A Capital Bikeshare bike (from the riderβs perspective) stopped at a crosswalk. There is a Christmas tree bungeed to the front rack of the bike and a mittened hand on the left handlebar.
A Capital Bikeshare dock under an overpass. In the foreground is a red bike with a Christmas tree bungeed to its front rack (with the cut end closest to the camera), and in the distance is the US Capitol.
For the 2nd year in a row, #treebybike was really #treebybikeshare - the whole round trip was done in 47 minutes, and a 7β tree provides a natural buffer from cars! π Thanks @bikeshare.bsky.social! #bikedc ππ²

This is heartbreakingly cruel and hypocritical. The same admin that has redefined refugee status to cover white South Africans is now going to drown thousands of refugees already approved for their status in red tape, potentially even seeking to strip some of their status and deport them.
