Couldn't decide whether to include the cat or not - what do you think? ๐ค
thank you! I love highlighting how hard we worked to make our world rich and diverse so that people can appreciate it as much as I do - it was a big part of why I joined the project to begin with! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ
11.07.2025 05:13 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0thank you so much for enjoying our show!! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ always makes me happy to hear it was as special for others as it was for me!

11.07.2025 02:35 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Phew, if you've made it to the end of this thread, thanks for sticking around - I hope it was interesting! I've been putting off sharing a lot of these odds and ends because it's always such a challenge to figure out how to present them in an engaging way on social media, ha ha!
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Lastly, these're just a couple of wheat assets to make Carol's walk through the cornfield at the beginning of the same episode look a bit better (designed and coloured by me).
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is a colour design from one of the flashbacks from Elena's tape in episode 4 (design by: Kosta Gregory) - we tried to "add more world-building" by making the beer more specific to where she was in her travels at the time (Spain).
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I was just following her lead). I believe that sequence was an homage to famous director Ingmar Bergman, but you'd have to ask our showrunner @danguterman.bsky.social to be sure - in my mind, it was always just the "really pretty black and white sequence," ha ha!
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is a shot from what we internally called the "Bergman sequence" at the beginning of episode 5 (responsible for colour only, design by @nooree.bsky.social; however I believe our colour design lead, Kali Ciesemier was primarily responsible for the rest of the colour design of this sequence -
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Still, I really enjoyed coming up with little stories for each of them in my head as I coloured them, & even if they're only on screen for a bit, I like to think it gives our show a kind of soul that you feel while watching it (responsible for colour only - designs by @nooree.bsky.social)
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Believe it or not, this was actually my first formal experience colour designing, so it was definitely a bit of a "learn by doing" situation (responsible for colour only - designs by @nooree.bsky.social and @jnoel150.bsky.social ) -
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The tech was awesome, but in order to "add more world-building," we ended up just redesigning a lot of them from scratch for an even more bespoke end-product (responsible for colour only - designs by Cole Ott)
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Given the number of characters in our world, we initially planned to use what we called our "character generator" to populate our world - not in the generative AI sense, but in the sense that we had our character designers create a bunch of background characters
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Post-production on Carol was particularly involved because we got a bit of a curve-ball of an executive note in the eleventh hour to "add more world-building," which is a really big (not to mention open-ended) ask as most of our designers were leaving!
(more images soon, I promise!)
In addition to leadership skills, art directing often also involves wearing a lot of hats and tying up loose ends, especially as designers roll off and you move into post/retakes.
11.07.2025 01:51 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Hope you all enjoyed the little Spellbound intermission from my Carol and the End of the World work - today I'm back with a megathread of all the colour design work I did while art directing! ๐งต
