The frustrating answer is "It depends." Here are some ways to narrow down the decision.
- Are there mechanics in the system you're writing for that trigger every room, like Worm's Meatgrinder? Would it be interesting or realistic to trigger a Torches Gutter in every sub-room?

A bit of graphic design solutioning I like in The Castle Automatic is the double mini-map that can show rooms that are far apart (mapwise) when their keys appear on the same page.
