Delighted to analyse the timbers of this wreck in Orkney ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ
The tree-rings revealed precise felling dates & timber provenance to target historical research on the when and where to ID the ship. Great teamwork with Wessex Archaeology, the Sanday community and my colleague @hamishdarrah.bsky.social

The ditch of the Roman camp of Raedykes in north east Scotland
The Roman camp of Raedykes near Stonehaven is one of the best preserved in Scotland. It covers around 38 hectares and has an irregular outline. Probably built in the late 1st century, by the 1700s it was being associated with the elusive site of the battle of Mons Graupius. #RomanSiteSaturday

The early church in Urquhart, the Aird and Strathglass
This blog is more or less a transcript of a talk I gave last weekend at the Highland Archaeology Festival in Inverness.
It was a great conference and it was wonderful to meet so many people in person...
A write-up of my talk from last weekend's Highland Archaeology Festival Conference. Featuring some new (and still developing) thoughts on Curetรกn's late seventh-century bishopric of Ross, and whether we can see a glimpse of it in Adomnรกn's Life of Columba. All thoughts and feedback welcome!

A Positive Reaction: How Archaeology is Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists
With support from The Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Fund grant, Wessex Archaeology and Sheffield Springs Academy demonstrate the powerful connection between chemistry and heritage.
In recent years, there has been a decline in the number of secondary school students taking up chemistry. Wessex knew they could help to turn that around.
So, they set out to help young people discover how it helps understanding and preserving our heritage.

A low grassy mound in a cemetery with trees around it.
This tumulus in the churchyard at Meigle, Perthshire is known as Vanora's Mound and is said to be the burial place of Vanora, aka Guinevere, the legendary queen of King Arthur. Early records show that is was once decorated with Pictish stones, suggesting it is actually a Pictish barrow #TombTuesday
