On the left panel (the two panels are hinged together, and there are paintings on the exterior panels as well), the young King, sumptuously dressed, kneels in a barren landscape. He is accompanied by three saints: John the Baptist, carrying the Lamb of God; Edward the Confessor, holding a ring; and Edmund with the arrow of his martyrdom in his hand. The saints present the King to the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, shown on the right-hand panel. They stand in a flowery meadow surrounded by angels, one of whom carries a white standard with a red cross. The richness of the tempera paintwork, the meticulously stamped gilding and the refinement of detail is extraordinary. The infant Christ is wrapped in cloth of gold, and stippled within his halo is a crown of thorns and three nails – symbols of the Passion.
What’s #Christmas without the stunning Wilton Diptych? A rare surviving set of tempera panel paintings, a portable set made for the private use of Richard II, King of England from 1377 to 1399. The brilliant blue garments of the angels are painted with ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli. 🎄 1/

I love the identical maenads in both of the Dionysian frescoes below - the one on the left is from the Villa dei Misteri (my bad shot, since we couldn't see it at the right angle, and it was in the dark), the right from the House of the Thiasus. More evidence for ancient pattern books, I think. 🏺

Fresco showing guests at a banquet, from the House of the Triclinium in Pompeii, AD 40-79. This fresco shows men and women reclining together on couches, as slaves serve them. One guest says in Latin, “FACITIS VOBIS SUAVITER EGO CANTO” – “Get yourselves comfortable, I am going to sing”. Another replies “EST ITA VALEAS” – “Yes, you go for it!”.
An ancient Roman dice.
On the first day of the #Saturnalia festival, a Princeps Saturnalia was appointed among the household by throwing the dice. The King of Saturnalia presided over and commanded people to do things such as preparing a banquet or singing a song. 🪔

The artwork "King Meeting Demon Warriors" depicts a ruler on horseback encountering a group of mythical demon figures, rendered in a linear style likely reflecting traditional storytelling practices. The scene, part of the Brooklyn Museum's Asian Art collection, captures the dynamic interplay between human and supernatural realms in classical Asian narratives.
