Damals, in den neunziger Jahren. Durch die Fenster ohne Vorhänge sind Carolyn Gammon – beim Backen – und Katharina Oguntoye – beim Lesen – zu sehen.“

A transfer of custodianship was signed by them and Marion Ackermann, president of @kulturspk.bsky.social. But the ancestors cannot return for burial until the Tanzanian government approves of the repatriation.

Descendants of Mangi Molelia of Kibosho visited Germany for the 1st time to pay respect to their (great) grandfather & 2 relatives, whose remains were identified in Berlin @kulturspk.bsky.social via DNA analysis. Molelia had been hanged on the order of colonial officers in 1900. 🧵 about their visit.

Statement by Molelia family: „Introduction The descendants of Mangi Molelia express profound gratitude to all organisations and individuals who made their recent journey possible, enabling the family to honour their great-great-grandfather. Special thanks are extended to Mr Kondradin Kunze, Mzee Mboro, and all who contributed to this important occasion. Historical Context Mangi Molelia was executed by German colonial officers over 126 years ago. His remains, together with associated belongings, were taken to Germany. For generations, his family and the Kibosho Kingdom have endured the trauma and injustice of this act. The family of Mangi Molelia hereby issues the following demands: • Immediate Return of Remains and Belongings Germany must openly work with our government to ensure the swift repatriation of Mangi Molelia's remains and all associated belongings. • Full Responsibility for Repatriation Germany must bear the costs and logistical responsibilities of the repatriation process, enabling a dignified burial in the Kibosho Kingdom in accordance with cultural and spiritual traditions. • Reparations for Colonial Crimes Reparations must be provided for the brutal execution, as well as for the lasting damage and trauma inflicted upon the family and the Kibosho Kingdom for more than a century. Call to Action We call upon German institutions holding the remains and belongings, as well as the German vernment, to acknowledge their responsibility and take immediate, concrete steps towards tution and reparations. Furthermore, we demand close collaboration between the German overnment and our Government to ensure a smooth and respectful process of restitution and reparation. Closing Statement This is not merely a matter of justice. It is a necessary step towards healing, recognition of alonial crimes, and the restoration of dignity to the people of Kilimanjaro, Mangi Molelia and his descendants.“

Auf Leselisten und in Literatur-geschichten kam Schwarze deutsche Literatur bisher kaum vor. Die Forschung zu diesem Thema nimmt gerade an Fahrt auf, etwa mit dem Band „Schwarze deutsche Literatur" (Hg. von Jeannette Oholi, 2025). Ein großer Teil der Arbeit wird von aktivistischen Gruppen geleistet. In Berlin bieten etwa „Desta" Dekoloniale Stadtführungen an, und die Organisation „Each One Teach One" sammelt Literatur sowie Dokumente zu Schwarzer und afrodiasporischer Literatur.
