I finally figured it out when I was a commander and had AGRs of my own. Said at the beginning of FY “hey get me a seat for the end of FY,” bc August is when everyone shits themselves to spend $ and chose mountaineer bc airborne and air assault ones dudes always fight to get their special boys into.

Next time I had timing/opportunity to strike for an airborne seat it was 2011 (BCA days!) I was already a captain but the battalion S1. AGR Ops sergeant major took one look at the request and said “why the fuck would we send the S1 to airborne school” and sent his son in the sniper squad instead.

RNCO did what I asked but instead of the sequence I lined up starting a week after IBOLC, dumbass scheduled me for classes in the next FY. Deployed shortly thereafter so it was all moot, then the priority became getting into grad school, grad school, then starting a life.

Me, personally, I had to take a year break between two-month OCS and six-month BOLC II/III to keep my civilian employer happy. Down at BOLC III I was feeling good and called my unit. “Line up airborne, air assault, pathfinder, and pre-Ranger” in a long string immediately after BOLC III...

None of this takes into account deployment schedules or other things going on in your 20s like having and keeping a big boy job, your spouse’s job and needs, or trying to have/having kids and shit.

For Pathfinder, that always seemed to be tougher. Be in an ASI slot, be a BOLC honor grad, already be down at Benning, have support to get a walk-on seat, etc.

For RTAC and Ranger? If you are an infantry 2LT and wanted to go, the 2000s Guard could have made it happen.

Man… I’m YG 2007, and there was plenty of money, stability, and Guard seats in 07-09. Trick then was timing with deployment schedules. By 2011 onward, BCA, sequestration, and shutdown dick dance led to a lot of school dreams being crushed. For nice-to-have schools like airborne/air assault…
