A Photograph of a Grain of Salt

Some mornings everything feels spectacular or maybe I mean everything feels like spectacle. The rain seems unbelievable on the other side of the curtains. Outside, crime scene tape whips in the wind like some twenty-first century tumbleweed. Tomorrow night so far away, I don't imagine knowing why. A hand in front of my faceβ€”my hand-disappears when I hold it up. About suffering what if the old masters had it wrong, how a frame can't hold everything or how some musings fall short to what loss can mean on a microscopic level. A look at anything up close is like looking at everything at once and then it's like nothing, nothing at all.

The Burning of Nottoway Plantation A fire at the Nottoway Plantation raises an important question: how do we treat locations with heinous histories?

I had thoughts about the plantation burning. Lots of thoughts.

"Your sister has no thesis" really stuck with me. If I was teaching comp, this would be a good stock comment that 1% of my students would get.

Love this generous description of Larry Levis' "system":

"Extant documentation of the state in which Levis's materials were initially found following his death indicates that Levis likely maintain only a very rudimentary organizational system."
