Historian of 17th century German religion and culture in the San Francisco area. I have a kid, a corgi and a garden. Posts mostly in English, occasionally in German or Spanish. All typos are due to the demon Titivillus, who has possessed my autocorrect.

03.03.2026 18:32 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0external editing is important! the internet loves to talk about what happened to tarantino post-sally menke, george lucas without marcia lucas & carrie fisher, authors & showrunners when they get so big networks/studios/publishers stop pushing back & tightening them up. this applies to reporting too
03.03.2026 17:09 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Every library should also have the opportunity to be an archive of some cultural form of their choosing. Maybe it's local history or an eccentric crafts-person or media form, but part of a library's unique identity should involve a nifty room filled with objects that exist nowhere else.

I'm not linking to yet another White Man On The Internet's blog post, but suffice to say:
No, LLM extruders *can't* do ethnographic research or social semiotic analysis
What they *have done* is flood the zone with slop that makes social science research & analysis infinitely harder than before
I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing βreviewedβ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.
My child is so German and she doesn't even know it: she's obsessed with MΓΌlltrennung.
In California we have a system of separating our landfill, organics and recycling* and she's obsessed with it.
(*Our recycling is single stream, but every German I know has found it a satisfactory substitute)
"Make people dependent enough, and then make it shitty"
Still giggling at this hilarious video from the Norwegian Consumer Council "A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator" which seems a perfect embodiment of Silicon Valley and tech generally these days

Why did we used to have such long reading lists and now they are much shorter?
Wrong answer: because students used to read so much more!
Right answer: before PDFs students had to find physical copies and there often was only one copy in the library. So you had to give plenty of choice.
Iβm going to need to cut this line I like from a piece about the Iran War youβll read tomorrow, so I post it here to tell my darling I will see it in the gardens of heaven:
βWe will not get bored," Trump said on Monday, minutes before talking about how beautiful the White House drapes are.
Time once again for your reminder that merely being a member of a nation-state's armed forces when that nation-state wages a war of aggression is NOT in and of itself a war crime or a crime against humanity.
The Allies very pointedly did not prosecute individual German or Japanese troops at the end

Prof. Robert Pape:
"I have studied every air campaign since WWI... I've modelled the bombing of Fordow and regime change in Iran for 20 years... We are now in the grip of the escalation trap... This has never worked in over 100 years... Trump is up against the weight of history".
The first time I heard that phrase in passing, as a Catholic school girl, it sounded like the worst penance/punishment ever.

Dubai, the UAE, the glittery, modern, luxurious, βsafeβ world you have is built on the blood and backs of labor from south, Southeast Asia and Africa in execrable, documented enduring conditions. How easily people ignore the ugly behind the designer stores and flashy tourist traps
