Having been one of the handful of people in my hometown who saw red flags about someone others were lauding and supporting, it wasn’t “personal vindication” exactly

I agree that expecting authors to be somehow perfect or to fully align with our beliefs is unreasonable. It’s also entirely human to find that one feels differently about their work, knowing more about them. Engaging with the complexities of human writers is part of engaging with their writing.
