Right, it’s the hostility that I find bizarre. When you say “It fills me with dread bordering on anger,” that seems like quite an overreaction to 9 minutes of music. Unless a composer is attempting to offend, how is hostility an appropriate reaction?

Of course, we all have our taste, but I’ve always sensed animosity from you about certain types of music which always seemed odd to me given how you engage with a variety of other music.

Understood — I didn’t think you’d ever say that to them. I’m just curious about the disconnect: you’re consistently insightful about music you love, so the inability or unwillingness to personally engage when it doesn’t stands out.

What do you imagine their goals to be? I’ve spent decades around musicians in this space, and found their aims to be deliberate and sincere. I’m not sure how “this sounds awful and I don’t understand it” would indicate that any mission has been accomplished.

I think this (timing) is the key point. It can be true that the AI ban is too heavy handed AND that it is the right thing to do for now. Artists will always find creative uses for a technology, but at the moment, with the speed at which AI slop can proliferate, it would just be an avalanche of slop.
