Aida Overton Walker - Dancer, choreographer, and all-around trailblazer.

Happy Women's History Month! Welllllll....I had promised y'all some dance history, so here you go.

First up is the Queen of the Cakewalk, Aida Overton Walker. Born in NYC in 1880, she'd go on to become the first Black choreographer to work on Broadway.

I met Dr. Mary Beth Rose while doing my PhD in Toronto but living in Chicago. If I recall correctly, she came to a talk I gave at the Newberry Library and then took me out for lunch soon after. It was so kind of her to take an interest in my research. May her memory be for a blessing.
