I think this is quite accurate and that there are a couple of things potentially going on there:
- Men are hierarchical and tend to be overly impressed by men who seem manlier even by the dumbest yardstick. Winning a "manly man" over to your cause feels like a special elusive accomplishment...

It seems like the YA that's taught in schools these days is often written in diaristic first person with a teen protagonist (so "kids can relate to it") and follows a rigorously linear timeline. As a result, there's little new vocabulary and no need to puzzle out anything that's going on.

Payton v. New York stands for the _opposite_ principle. It says that under the 4th Amendment police can't enter premises in search of a felony suspect without a warrant -- but an arrest warrant is sufficient.
Most immigration law violations aren't criminal; when they are they're usu misdemeanors.

Also, none of the people detained in this instance were breaking any immigration laws.

Link to that SCOTUS decision if you don't mind.
The last time I heard, the majority of undocumented people cannot be deemed fugitives because most (not all, but most) immigration law violations are not criminal in nature.

That's just cookies. Websites have been storing the info that you sent your Mom a birthday card last April and using it to recommend you do the same this April for who knows how many years.
I feel like soon I'm going to be having this convo

Oh, and an AI dilemma I haven't heard discussed:
the ethics of using AI-branded services that are probably just using it as a buzzword and don't actually incorporate AI.
"EcardAI helps you make e-cards by using the magic of AI to suggest templates for the kinds of cards you like to make!"

In an interesting sign of the times, I noticed the other day that istock, the stock photo site, has added a no-AI guarantee. Many of their competitors are simply labeling AI images.
Smart way to distinguish your product by quality.

Cars are more expensive in relative terms than they were 10-15 years ago, but they're also unambiguously better on average and last longer regardless of where they're made. Why have other manufactured mechanical things declined in quality so much?
(I'm doing my weekend rants again aren't I)

needs to be thrown into a ravine. i would have replaced it if I hadn't had to spend a couple grand on car-related things.
Meanwhile, I have a Toyota that has required around $4000 of work over that same time period, has 230K miles on it, and will, knock on wood, do another 20+.

I'm resigned to the decline in quality in most things except appliances.
I'm still mad that I keep having to replace my fridge and washing machine after 5-10 years of unexceptional daily use, and that's after repeatedly doing minor repairs myself.
I have a dishwasher that's 11 years old and...

about to pay $75 to get resoled but first I carefully searched for the exact (discontinued) product number and found an almost unworn pair of the exact same 2009 shoes on Depop or eBay for around $50. TLDR: buy 10-year-old+ clothes that sat in a rich guy's closet.

What they used to say on menswear forums was "a $100 pair of dress shoes lasts 2 years; a $300 pair lasts forever." I almost bought Aldens a couple of times and looking back it would have been worth it. At the same time - and this is a tip - I had a pair of Clarks I got 10 years out of and was...

Noem's ad blitz was in many ways a shadow presidential campaign. She got $200 million of ads with her starring in just about all of them. Tr*mp can't stand to be upstaged. I think being repeatedly reminded of her massively boosting her profile without his blessing is what did it.
