Today at the Svalbard Science Forum, Dr Elena Barbaro presented the PRIN ROSETTA project investigating the transport of chemical species on and into the snow pack during ROS (Rain on Snow events) in Ny Alesund Svalbard.

A study led by our research team in Milan together with the Japanese Space Agency and the University of Chiba as well as @esa.int investigating the darkening effect of glacial algae has been published.

CNR hosted EPB’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Maria Grigoratou, in Rome (Sept 16–17, 2025). Discussions with ISP, DSSTTA, MUR & MAECI reinforced international cooperation and Italy’s commitment to polar research. Facing climate change requires strong global partnerships.

Our colleague Fabrizio De Blasi, with Daniele Zannoni (Ca’ Foscari), presented the poster:
“THE ISP-CNR ICE CORE DRILLING SYSTEM: ADDRESSING FIRN AQUIFERS FROM ARCTIC TO HIGH-ALTITUDE GLACIERS”.

Provides key insights into firm aquifers and glacier dynamics.

These data will also shed light on mesoscale structures (eddies, fronts, and underwater currents) that play a vital role in transporting heat, nutrients, and organisms between water masses.

The new oceanographic mooring — affectionately named nS1 “Nessy” in tribute to the legendary deep-sea creature — is 600 meters long and equipped with oceanographic sensors, hydrophones, and an automatic sediment trap to collect suspended particles and zooplankton.

Despite being unable to recover the S1 mooring, the mission didn’t stop. Thanks to the crucial support of NATO-CMRE, the team quickly assembled a new mooring. Using high-resolution seafloor mapping, they identified an optimal site for deployment, located 3.3 nautical miles north of S1.

The 2025 edition of the scientific expedition to the Svalbard Islands finished!
On board the NATO research vessel Alliance, researchers from CNR-ISP (Bologna) and technicians from OGS (Trieste) completed their mission in the Fram Strait — a key location for monitoring climate change in the Arctic.
