Altadena asked Edison to bury power lines. Some fire victims say that could cost them $40,000 Altadena residents worry Edison's work to bury power lines after the Eaton fire could cost families tens of thousands of dollars. And dozens of trees could die as crews dig trenches and cut their root...

This is nuts. β€œThen he learned he would have to pay $20,000 to $40,000 to connect his home, which was damaged by smoke and ash, to Edison’s new underground line. A nearby neighbor received an estimate for $30,000, he said.” #Altadena

How Parties Learn... if at all with Prof. Seth Masket | Political Reality | S01E08 YouTube video by Political Reality

I was honored to join the new Political Reality podcast to discuss how (and whether) parties learn from their failures.

I've been assigning it in my Intro American Politics class for years. If you want to think about conflict between the President, Congress, and the Courts... this story really has everything.

Supreme Power 'A stunning work of history.'—Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of No Ordinary Time and Team of Rivals , Supreme Power, Franklin Roosevelt vs. the Supreme Court, Jeff Shesol, 978039...

Since there has been considerable discussion about Supreme Court reforms lately: I cannot recommend enough Jeff Shesol's Supreme Power (2010). This remains one of my favorite books about American politics. wwnorton.com/books/978039...

I was just recommending it to a close friend. I don't know of a great audiobook version, but many of the best things in this book are in giant tables that it really helps to see, anyway.

More people should read this book: Paul Kennedy, Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. It's an old book, but it's thoughtful. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/91615/...

Can you tell us more about how you efficiently made play testing cards? I’m helping my students build a politics simulation, and it would be nice to have higher-quality cards for testing…

β€œThe world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

John Adams: β€œthe very definition of a Republic, is β€˜an Empire of Laws, and not of men.’” That’s what this is about, too.

Ever Forward: The Story of California Forward

If you are interested in #California politics, the book you should read but probably haven't is Susan Lovenburg's history of the organization California Forward. You can just download the book... for free. But if you're interested in the state's recent political history, it's a great book:

28.02.2026 00:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It says it was edited, but it doesn’t say what the edits were.

Was the article edited to take something out, I wonder?

Not here to defend the administration, but, I suppose, how very bluesky of me, I care a lot about precision and evidence.

β€œOne of the sources said he was not the right fit for the position. Still, the sources who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity did not say if there was any specific trigger for the decision.”

Did they edit the text of the article after you posted this? I did not see that in the article, as several others here have pointed out.

Any time you are looking at total and independent numbers, it is really important to make the same graphs for Republicans and Democrats. The partisan self-and-opponent descriptions provide a lot of useful information about how to read these.

My students are busy designing their politics simulation, so they are dealing with exactly these kinds of questions. What should be allowed? Anyway, I have been thinking about this story for years. Remarkable. "And then the game was stopped."

Why the U.S. Might Not Use a Nuke, Even if Russia Does The story of how American officials learned to love the bomb a little bit less.

From 2016. A US government war game re: Russian invasion of the Baltics. "Finally, the generals settled on firing a few nuclear weapons at the former Soviet republic of Belarus, even though, in the game thus far, Belarus had played no role in the war. And then the game was stopped."

Cool. I think the way to do it is to create an email list so we have a way to coordinate *not* on here, and then let each other know what we are doing. In?

Anyone else interested in trying to share higher-quality academic content in some organized way here?

26.02.2026 00:47 β€” πŸ‘ 6 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I wonder if we started a tradition of sharing a favorite paper or book every Fridayβ€”and tried to get some others to participate in Post-a-Paper? Kind of β€œif you build it, they will come.” Happy to kick around ideas over email.

26.02.2026 00:46 β€” πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 1

I wonder if there is a way to collaborate on building that together. I’d participate in a coordinated effort to share more academic work.
