I can't bring everything up to the level of the character, due to time, and performance constraints. And cartoonish looks are a mask to excuse low-poly meshes.

I'm a huge fan of open-source and free software, like Blender, which I use for all my modeling and animation.
Alright, so the hay bales don't explode violently when kicked. (yet.) But they jiggle and disappear after 4-5 kicks, and that makes me happy. I now have the tools I need to make interesting and destructible environments.
