Sorry to be a know-it-all but Dr.Feelgood got their name from another song called "Doctor Feelgood" recorded in 1964 by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates. Wilko was a huge fan of Mick Green, the Pirates guitar player...... 😀😀

Outlook

I grew up with Thackray via his appearances on The Braden Beat. All my family loved his wit. He was the first person I ever saw perform live. That was at my local Arts Centre with my parents. 1976 I think it was. Glad that he is appreciated a lot more than he was when he was alive.

Blimey. I’ve been there to see Laura Cantrell twice. Weird to see the advertisements for the bingo on the notice board beforehand. Whatever happened to Joanna Newsom anyway? Can you remember who the main act was?

I saw Joanna at the Colston Hall (as it was called then) with Roy Harper as support. Memorable.

Smiley Smile will seem like a disappointment after you’ve heard Smile but that’s to be expected. Quirky little record though.

Slightly controversial but I actually think Wilson’s Smile is better than the Capitol version as it’s more complete. Incidentally I’ll send you something that I think is a lost gem from 69/70. A track called “Been So Long” that Wilson never finished. There’s a 7 min version that’s just incredible.

Track down the Smile Sessions, Smiley Smile, Beach Boys Today, Summer Days and Summer Nights and Wild Honey. Plenty of good stuff there. Friends, 20/20 and Carl and The Passions have their moments too. Love to know what you think.

I have a friend who’s a Beach Boys nut. I think “Surfs Up” is his favourite as well. Not sure whether you’ve got as far as “Holland” but that’s a really good album as well. After that it tails off dramatically.

Fantastic album. Can't agree with your "Pet Sounds" comment though. In my opinion It's the finest album ever made. I've had the chance recently to go through every BB record up to "Holland" and as much as the Wilson's Carl & Dennis contributed to their albums it's Big Brian's input that inspires.
