Centering cognitive neuroscience on task demands and generalization - Nature Neuroscience
Task demands are a primary determiner of behavior and neurophysiology. Here the authors discuss how understanding their influence through multitask studies and tests of generalization is the key to ar...
Datasets like NSD & THINGS offer rich stimuli but often test a single task.
After great conversations at #CCN2025 on multi-task studies & generalization in brains & models, I thought I would repost our perspective for those interested in this topic. We need multiple tasks!π doi.org/10.1038/s415...

People talk a lot about objects, but what about the softness of a cushion, the greenness of an emerald, or the viscosity of oil? In our work just published @pnas.org, we shed light on how we make sense of the hundreds of materials around us.

Material category of visual objects computed from specular image structure - Nature Human Behaviour
Schmid et al. examine how humans perceive material classes from image structure produced by surface reflectance properties.
Excited to share my paper with K.Doerscher & P.Barla @NatHumBehav!
By varying the physical properties of (rendered photorealistic) objects, we show that image structure produced by specular reflections drives visual perception of material category!
