I don’t recall that photo being in the book, the ending there is quite different actually. I think it was Kubrick’s idea. My guess is that he was hinting Jack is a reincarnation of the previous caretaker, which would explain why Grady says something like ‘what do you mean? you’ve always worked here'

Same premise, but Kubrick’s version is way more psychological, while the original leans more into the supernatural. Wendy’s character is totally different too… but honestly, both are great
