Paper in Nature Climate Change journal reveals major role wealthy emitters play in driving climate extremes
Uncomfortable truth.
'In 2020, the global mean temperature was 0.61C higher than 1990. 65% of that increase could be attributed to emissions from the global richest 10%, a group they defined as including all those earning more than β¬42,980 (Β£36,472) a year.'

For those of you concerned with and working on the humanitarian system reset, these are the emerging lines of the EU position:

And despite the daily horror on TV and social media, governments supporting and enabling mass displacement, mass starvation, mass rape, and mass murder, have not been pressured into taking action. We, collectively, have failed to make those arguments compelling enough.
There is much to be done.

Common to both is the fact that we have lost the battle of narratives. When US, UK, German, Swiss and other aid was cut and/or dismantled, there was little protest outside of our own echochamber.

To be truly effective, it must be reimagined and reborn, not simply reset. Local voices, local needs, and local knowledge must guide resource allocation. Solutions exist, but becoming people-centered, more efficient and more effective will not spontaneously happen in New York, Geneva, or Brussels.

Secondly, the humanitarian reset doesn't go nearly far enough. NGOs and civil society feel marginalised with the plan of action presented by Tom Fletcher still being overly UN-centric.

The mechanisms for legal recourse are also under attack. In the end, it remains as true as ever that there are no humanitarian solutions to political problems.

Humanitarian diplomacy was discussed, reflecting anger over the lack of political leadership and moral bravery to act - not only issue statements - on behalf of people affected by crises. Violations of international humanitarian law and war crimes are committed on a daily basis with impunity.

Firstly, humanitarians have been unable to end the brutal conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and elsewhere. There was a huge amount of frustration, anger, and outrage, with a standing ovation for Philippe Lazzarini and the hundreds of UNRWA staff killed.

It felt at times like large-scale group therapy. Perhaps inevitable given the state of the world and the state of the humanitarian system. There was lots of venting, exasperation, and expressions of support, from rooms full of like-minded aid workers and policy specialists.

The situation in Gaza remains intolerable.
Israelβs strikes in Gaza go beyond what is necessary.
Humanitarian aid must never be politicised or militarised.
Challenging the special status of Jerusalem risks further escalating tensions.

If aid doesnβt enter Gaza now, 14,000 babies may die. UN peacekeepers must step in | Michael Fakhri
As a UN special rapporteur on the right to food, I have watched for 19 months as Israel starves children. The world must act now
'When the security council fails to act because of veto, the UN charter empowers... peacekeepers to accompany humanitarian convoys and deliver aid. The UN general assembly must break the illegal blockade and stop the starvation.'
