So it is my earnest plea to all of you not to give in to the tempting allure of hatred and mob rule, and to remember that at one time this odd combination of keyboard and mouse was not a vehicle for vitriol and emotional murder, but a means -- sometimes the only one -- for primal human connection.

But somewhere, still hiding mouselike amidst the unrelenting and unapologetic evil, the baldfaced subjugation of independent thought and the deliberate poisoning of the human spirit, there is still a tiny, frail, yet still vital desire to each out and connect with someone who understands.

Today, this "internet" has become a cesspool of disinformation, a platform for political gamesmanship and a means of seizing control of the masses and bending them to your will. It has blinded us to objective reality, driven wedges into society and pitted us against one another.

And you started to realize that, no, you weren't alone. You weren't a freak. There were others whose dreams were exactly the same as yours. Those dreams could be bright or they could be dark or they could be beyond description but no matter what they were, they were something someone else shared.

Then 300 became 600, then 1200, then 2400, and soon you started to discover that you weren't alone after all. You ran into people like @kencougr.bsky.social and @khaeldragon.bsky.social and @bigtig.bsky.social and @theemeralddragon.net and @torrle.bsky.social and others too numerous to mention.

Then this thing came along. First they called it "timesharing." Later they came up with weird names like "Arpanet" and "mucks" and they talked about "BBS's". You had to spend a month's pay on something called a "300 baud modem".

Gather round, Kids. Let an old wolf tell you how this shit is supposed to work.

Back in the day, you were alone. A freak. Nobody had the same dreams that you did. You were abnormal. Those secret little thoughts and desires of yours could never be shared. You were forever alone with your shame.
