respecting the limitations set by the OC's owner should be common sense. It is one thing if it is a series character as they are commercial creations, but OCs are generally personal things and owners are much easier to contact.

you should be using invoices in the first place, both as the artist and the client. Invoices allow artists to send them under a business name and the payment protection can work in the favour of both sides if one or the other tries some funny business.
