This is speaking only for electric cars I should clarify. I know nothing about gas cars and if they use this same architecture
03.03.2026 23:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is speaking only for electric cars I should clarify. I know nothing about gas cars and if they use this same architecture
03.03.2026 23:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That is partially true, most cars before ~2015 did not use this type of architecture, but today most major automakers (Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, GM, VW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Ford) use a single TCU to handle all communications. It significantly reduces costs and complexity of the architecture.
03.03.2026 23:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is hard to explain in a comment: all external communication in a vehicle occurs through the βTCUβ. This is everything from apple CarPlay, to car keys, to OTAs. While Apple doesnβt control this, they do have a say in the cybersecurity, or they wonβt approve the car to use their software
03.03.2026 22:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 01000% agree. I want to be very clear that I support harsher regulations. I apologize if my analogies came off as libertarian, that is not my goal. My goal was to emphasize how consumer-manufacturer relations function when it comes to ISO and SAE standards. Not saying itβs a good system by any means.
03.03.2026 22:32 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It is very understandable for people to be concerned about cybersecurity and it is sad how weak US safety regulations are, but I hope people can understand what systems are in place so they know what to look for when buying a vehicle. Iβm not saying itβs a great system, just stating the facts.
03.03.2026 22:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0CAFE standards enable less safe vehicles. My instance on how regulation work is based on the fact that I am a vehicle electronics engineer who deals with this stuff on a daily basis. FSR, HARA, ASIL, all very complex topics that go far beyond what can be explained in a bluesky comment.
03.03.2026 21:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That, and lobby for stricter safety requirements.
03.03.2026 21:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0US safety standards are far behind the rest of the world, especially with CAFE standards encouraging more dangerous vehicles. The current administration also has been deregulating automotive safety. Itβs a genuine problem. The best thing to do is due diligence when buying a car.
03.03.2026 21:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Additionally, if a car supports android auto, Apple CarPlay or runs on android automotive, it complies with all standards as Google and Apple require it. You canβt be certified to included these in your car without being compliant to the standards.
03.03.2026 21:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0But if lots of people were getting sick from the food, the business would probably lose customers and get in trouble. Itβs the same with automakers. If for some reason they didnβt comply with the ISO/SAE standards, they would open themselves up to lawsuits and recalls and lose customer trust.
03.03.2026 21:31 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Best way is just to ask. The sales people might not know off the top of their heads but they sure as hell can find out, or you can look it up. Additionally, if the car is sold in an EU country, it legally must comply with UNECE R155. Itβs not worth it for the automakers not to comply with ISO/SAE
03.03.2026 21:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0You are. When you look to buy a car would you buy one that doesnβt comply with cybersecurity standards? Nobody is enforcing the fact that a car needs a floor, but you the buyer probably wouldnβt buy a car without a floor.
03.03.2026 21:03 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0There are strict cybersecurity requirements for all vehicles sold in the USA, such as ISO 21434. As someone who designs vehicle electronics I can say, companies cannot sell vehicles without cybersecurity considerations. Nobody is going around controlling EVs with flipper zeros.
03.03.2026 19:35 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One of the biggest boondoggles from the automotive industry to avoid making electric cars

03.03.2026 01:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I see people in the hydrogen car community calling it growing pains that βearly adoptersβ have to deal with. Hydrogen cars have been around for decades, we are way past βearly adoptersβ, nobody wants them!
03.03.2026 01:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0A single car crash has wiped out nearly the entire California hydrogen refueling network for several days now. Guys, hydrogen cars are so stupid.
